Hello everyone I'm just trying to understand what I have and it is very frustrating. It all started about 3 months ago when I got Gastro, the illness lasted for about 1 and half days with the regular symptoms of gastro nausea, throwing up a lot, headaches etc etc. As the gastro wore off I noticed that I had trouble breathing or getting a good breathe in from my mouth as if my neck were tighter than usual. After a couple days I started to get severe chest pains & severe pain in my throat. I went to the hospital and the DR proscribed me with pantoprazole 40 mg for about a months worth of pills. It helped with the chest pain but nothing else. When the pills finished I was still getting severe pain in my throat & globus sensation which would come & go. That pain lasted for a couple weeks & for some reason just went away. Now 3 monthes later all I'm left with is the sensation of still not being able to breathe properly from my mouth and it takes a while to get a good breathe in. Also at times I get the burning of heartburn but in my throat not my stomach. I'm 24 years old and quit smoking close to 2 years ago. I have an appointment with an ENT DR Wednesday & hoping to get a referral for a gastroenterologist as well. Any help would be much appreciated as not being able to get a good breathe in is very annoying and worrying. Has anyone experienced such symptoms? Thank you!

I have the same problem, posted a similar question with no reply.

I have had breathing problems for 3 years now.

I am going to ask a doctor about Vagus nerve as it seems like antidepressants helped some people with LPR.

I have to tell you something I noticed, though.

I am Canadian, but I live in Thailand. As you probably know it is very hot here, but every time I go out on a sunny day, my breathing and health in general seems to improve. I thought I might be Vitamin D deficient, but after taking the high dose supplements for a while I think this is not the case.

I can not explain why I feel better when outside.

Your oxygen absorption is low. Take your blood pressure, it will also be low. Try nitric oxide supplement $10 Walmart start slow it is totally natural but hits hard at first when your weak and have a lack of oxygen in blood. Take with food, the buzz is needed oxygen, not caffeine. It totally helped me.

do you have a cough or mucus in your throat/airways?

If you have a hiatus hernia that can push up on your lungs and restrict them so they aren't able to inflate fully. You could also have Vocal chord dysfunction which can be caused by reflux burning your vocal chords and also when your throat senses acid it can sometimes close the vocal chords resulting in you momentarily being unable to breathe air in in an attempt to protect the airways from the damaging effects of acid. I've had that happen a couple of times at night and its not pleasant. I've also had the sensation of not being able to take a deep breath in which lasted a good few months and think this was caused by hiatus hernia and or my airways being inflamed due to gerd.

Either way I think I think a referral to an upper GI is a wise decision and perhaps pulmonologist to rule anything else out.

I have mucus what seems to be mucus in airways, but no cough.

I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma, but I always found that to be suspicious because I actually feel better when I run and have mostly trouble inhaling and not exhaling.

Asthma meds also don't seem to help much (only a little) as I went through most of them.

Seems to be something a lot of us suffer with. I'm in the same boat. Tonnes of mucus which takes hours to clear off my airways in the morning. I too have inhalers which don't seem to do a great deal. Totally fed up with al to be honest. Getting me down as I'm sure you feel the same.

Hello everyone thanks for the responses i really appreciate it! I forgot to mention one other symptom that comes and goes it could be night or day but mostly night. I wooild just get this burning sensation through out my chest that can last 10 min up to a couple hours. Then it leaves and doesn't come back for weeks then back again. Anyone have any idea what it is? Unfortunately in Canada it is very hard to see a specialist beacuse you need a reference for everything and they tend not to give them out easily.

Hi fellow Canadian.

I don't have any advice for the above problem, but.....

If I was you I would be milking that supposed "free" medicare for all it is worth as we already pay crap load in taxes. Heck, I live in Thailand and still pay taxes to my government even though when I come for a visit I have no right to see a doctor. So, don't be shy.... ask for referrals.

Do an endoscopy and get tested for H Pylori.

Thanks beachman what exactly is H Pylori? I also called a private place and to do an endoscopy they said ot would cost 500 something dollars!!

Lucky you. I paid 600 bucks and Thailand is supposed to have cheap healthcare.

What province do you live in? I think Quebec is the only one with private healthcare.

H Pylori is found in the stomach and I think it is the only bacteria that can survive in acid environment. It was discovered relatively recently and it causes all king of long term problems. Well, that's what "they" think.

They can take a biopsy during the endoscopy and check for that. I am currently on 10 day antibiotic regime for H Pylori.

Since I have started PPI's I have noticed an improvement In my shortness of breath. I also have an improvement in my chestpain since starting dexilant 60 mg.

Really a endoscopy is the way to go so you can get down to the bottom of what is going on inside you.

I can only relay my experience. If it helps, great. If not, sorry I couldn't help. Prior to a month ago, a typical "episode" for me followed the following progression:

1. I'd get up in the morning, hop in the truck, and head to the first job site of the day. Soon after leaving the house, I'd stop and get coffee and a buttered roll, or something along those lines. (Every now and then this would happen at lunch instead of breakfast, by the way.)
2. As I finished this quick meal, I'd get short of breath, which triggered a bit of adrenaline. I would also experience bloating, gerd, and the extreme need to burp. On really bad occasions, it would feel like my intestines were clenching and my stomach was sliding up through my diaphragm and into my chest cavity, or the last swallow of food never made it down. The bloating and gas pressure could last hours. Then if I was lucky, I'd burp and the symptoms would either fade or disappear instantly. This would also happen once in a blue moon after dinner.
3. Symptoms generally would include: trouble drawing in sufficient breath, trouble swallowing, feeling of stuff in my esophagus, adrenaline rushes (anxiety), gas pressure, palpitations, weird sensations of blood sugar swings, general unease, massive swings in blood pressure, followed by the feeling of being wiped out and tired. In a handful of episodes, I actually had to pull the truck over and stand up and walk around to relieve the gas pressure and bloating.

While this never happened every day, it was getting more frequent. about a month ago on a business trip I said enough, time to figure out what this is. I suspected diabetes (I was at the heaviest weight ever in my life), but absent firm info and left to its own devices, your mind will take itself to the darkest place it can. I thought it might be an abdominal aneurysm or a heart problem. I started taking blood sugar readings on a hunch, and noticed wide swings throughout the day from 65 to 150. about this time I went to see my doctor, and we talked about the effects of diabetes, aging and food triggers. He suspected GERD right away, but thought food may have been triggering it. I was also told I was in the early stages of Type II diabetes and to get cracking on losing weight and exercising.

My first round of changes helped quite a bit: smaller meals, eating activia (doc's suggestion), plenty of water, keeping antigas chewables and gaviscon handy, keeping a food trigger list, and exercising. Problem was some days a trigger wouldn't trigger anything, and I would need neither antigas tablets nor gaviscon. I didn't see any sort of correlation with food.

As the pounds starting coming off, I felt better and better. I'm down almost 20 now, 30 more to go. But every now and then I'd still get the symptoms. Then one day I paid full attention and noticed my stomach gently twitching just before an episode would start. Kind of like butterfies in your stomach, or a gentle squeezing. Then I'd have the episode, and feel better in a few hours. So I talked to my doctor again, and started reading about Type II diabetes and the weird effects it brings on. One item I read was about delayed gastric emptying followed by rapid emptying (dumping syndrome). All of the symptoms matched to a tee. So for the last week or so, I've been following the eating and liquids guidelines, and life is 100% better. When I do sense stuff hung up in my stomach or throat, or start to feel the bloat and GERD, I do a couple of quick things and maneuvers, I feel my stomach empty, and the list of symptoms - every symptom - begins disappearing in under a half hour. And I haven't needed antigas chewables or gaviscon in almost 2 weeks.

I hope you figure it out. Right now I feel like I have total control over this, and have a brighter future ahead of me.

Yes I live in Quebec, I visited my ENT DR today, told him my symptoms & he prescribed me with some pills for the breathing insisting it was "asyma" but I didn't go get the pills yet and don't understand his writing. I also got a referral for a gastroenterologist but it is in a while I will try to find another. Thanks for your response

Thanks for your response today has been ok for me haven't had to much trouble breathing or chest pains but it is on and off really. I have visited my DR and have a future appointment with another DR. Anyway thanks for your story I appreciate it

PPI is portion pump inhibitor. Dexilant basically turns off the acid production. I think the dexilant does help me with the shortness of breath. I think the acid reflux was causing it. I'm still in rough shape.

My new medication regime is: allergy pill in morning, dexilant a half hour later, gaviscpn before bed to help reduce the risk of acid reflux at night as that is an issue for me. I also take it if necessary during day.

PPI is portion pump inhibitor. Dexilant basically turns off the acid production. I think the dexilant does help me with the shortness of breath. I think the acid reflux was causing it. I'm still in rough shape.

Pretty sure i have an hiatus hernia as well my friend. I have almost all the same symptoms just my case is unique because it all came from gastro. I threw up violently, about 10 times in 6 hours back in February & I'm almost certain this turned into the hiatus hernia.

My throat doesnt feel like how it use to feel. Before all this I didnt really think about my throat much it was just there. Now its all i think about. Its a constant discomfort. If I am awake it is bothering me. I get different feelings. One day it can be like a mucas feeling lump, the next day like a bunch of crumbs, it can feel very tight like someone is squeezing it, it can feel like im going choke, i have also gotten sharp pains on one side.

I get chest pain sometimes its tight other times its sharp.

I have all your symptoms, couple weeks ago the right side of my throat was in so much pain it was insane. The feeling of having something in your throat is called globus sensation. The weird thing is this all came from gastro a couple months ago, i threw up about 10x in 6 hours. One of the ways of getting a hital hernia is by vilolent vomiting. I still haven't been diagnosed with the hernia but my symptoms to match up to it. How did you get yours? Also do you get the feeling of acid reflex rising in your throat? The meds that you are taking do any work? Also how old are you and where are you from. Sorry for all the questions but i feel your pain, its been months now and i know it can be stressful but will pull through. Keep the faith!!

I have every the exact same symptoms as you, the feeling of having something in your throat is called gloubus sensation it's very annoying. A couple weeks ago the right side of my throat was in a lot of pain like a throbbing sharp pain that came and left at different times during the day. It's weird because this all started with gastro, I threw up about 10x in 6 hours & all tough I haven't been diagnosed with hital hernia, one of the ways of getting it is violent vomiting and It was pretty violent when I had gastro couple months ago. One more symptom I have Is sometimes I get acid reflex in my throat, I bought gaviscon and it seems to help, do you get that aswell? How did you get your hital hernia? Also do any of the meds you use work? Which Dr's have you seen so far, and how long is it you have this problem. How old are you and where are you from? Sorry for all the questions but this is very frustrating as you may know, it's been months now! Don't give up will fight through the problem!
