Can anyone help. I've had my test results back and it says I have a high demeester score 33.9 Just want to know if that's high or not. The results were emailed to me so I haven't spoken to my consultant yet.

Thats rather high, I'd like to say anything over 14 is abnormal.

Yes that's high. As the sickness said, anything over 14 is high.

Thanks for your replies. Apparently the 33.9 Demeester score was when I was supine - I don't know if that makes any difference .

they take into account all the scores in various positions and then decide what to do for treatment.

My pH test results confuse me. The results said the total number of reflux episodes were normal (36 reflux: 26 acid, 5 non-acidic) with oesophageal acid exposure elavated in the upright position, yet the diagnosis was:
1- Normal motility
2- Pathological acidic GER
3- Positive reflux-symptom association

Can anyone make head or tails of these results as I'm due for reflux surgery on the 16th and worried surgery won't help.

That tells me you have GERD. Just because your episodes were "normal" that was just for that day. You could have days that are much worse. Normal motility is good. That means your esophagus is working correctly.
I wouldn't put off surgery with those results if it were me.

Ok thanks, Bill. Yeah, I'm gonna go for it just got a bit confused with the "normal" reflux episodes bit even though the test came back as positive. Maybe just last minute anxiety that I'm doing the right thing. Cheers for the help anyway.

Can anyone give me some help in understanding my test results. They were e mailed to me so haven't spoken to my consultant yet.

Gastric ph below 4 for 98% of the time

Acid exposure was normal in upright position but prolonged in the supine

There were 65 acidic and non acidic events(normal <73) 44 which reached the proximal oesphagus

Supine reflux were slow to clear(due to lack of swallowing) hence bolus exposure time was some what increased

There was quite a lot of prandial aerophagia and post prandial gastric belching

Demeester score 33.9

131 episodes of belching 105 which were associated acidic and non-acidic reflux giving a positive SAP

Diagnosis

1) Weak peristalsis to liquid and vicous swallows but reasonable bolus
2) Normal post swallow facilitation with multiple rapid swallows
3) Increased prandial aeroghagia and gastric belching
4) Positive symptom association with acidic and non acidic reflux events and belching
5) Pathological supine reflux

Upright exposure time was normal, many reflux episodes had a high proximal extent.



Any information would be appreciated so at least I'll have some idea on what to ask the consultant.

Demeester score of 57. I know that this is high but is it Nissen fundoplication high? Im just worried about this surgery. I also have a small Hiatal hernia that he will repair as well. He said Magnets were another possibility but there are no long term results for that route.

Yes it's high enough for surgery. What was the correlation between symptoms and reflux episodes like? A positive correlation means you will likely benefit from NF if you choose to do it.

What do you mean correlation? Sorry I am very new to this whole process. I know on the Bravo test the top two symptoms rater were a) heartburn at 100% and B) Gasping at 99% the third symptom was a cough and that was rated at 92%. I know the doc told me those were good numbers. That most of the time a had a symptom there was a reflux event going on. He also said that the other tests all pointed to moderate to severe GERD and a small Hiatal herneia.

Yes those results show a good correlation, so your symptoms are caused by reflux. If you choose to have surgery you have a good chance of it alleviating the symptoms if it blocks the reflux.

has anyone had the surgery. I know it's not reversable and that makes me nervous. Also, the fact that I may still have to be on PPI's even after the surgery.

I had my NF surgery last year, best decision I ever made. The recovery is not easy, but it has definitely changed my life for the better. I am completely off of all stomach medication and have not had any asthma symptoms.

I think I am just dwelling on the negative things that could happen. What was the worst part about the recovery after this proceedure and do you have any advice. I also have been reading about electronic stimulation of the LES to rebuild the strength back up. Does anyone know if that is being practiced of it it is still theoretical at this point

Hi Smog1985, Endostim is the new procedure for GERD that delivers electrical stimulation to the LES to strengthen it. It is only available in some countries. You might want to google it or put Endostim in the search box on here to get some more information on it. It is something I'm considering as the data so far looks promising for GERD and is available in New Zealand where I live. Wishing you all the best.

Hello everyone, I have been suffering from GERD for a longtime now and only just got tests done. Can you let me know if my De Meester score of 87.9 even when I am on a high dose of proton pump inhibitor medication? And feed back would be extremely helpful. Thank you smile

There are a lot of factors other than just your DeMeester score involved in your pH monitoring test results. You should wait and speak to your doctor, he's a medical professional and we are not. Please let us know how that appointment goes.
