Hi all, I haven't been here for a while as luckily everything has been going really well after my nissen in September 2012. I've now come down with a bug which is causing diarrhoea and attempted vomiting. This is the first time that I've tried to vomit post wrap (I was lucky enough to not get morning sickness) and it turns out that I can't although I'm still retching.
My questions are these; will whatever infection I've contracted eventually just work its way out from the other end? I've been offered medication to help with the nausea. Has anyone tried this previously and did it help?
Thanks for your time

Hi LouF,
First, it is extremely important that you use anti-nausea medication to stop the retching. I wish I'd seen this post sooner. Repeated retching or vomiting is very hard on the wrap. Anyone else reading this post...if you have had a Nissen fundoplication, always keep anti-nausea drugs handy. I use Zofran for mild nausea, but when I have a stomach bug, Compazine suppositories work the best...they are stronger, and stop nausea in its tracks.
I found I could actually vomit...it felt different than pre-Nissen. I could feel the resistance, and then with pressure, it let go. Each stomach bug (I've had 3 since my surgery in '09) caught me unawares. I vomited suddenly, with no warning. Each time, though, I immediately treated myself with Compazine, and stopped further vomiting episodes.
As to your question...yes, you will get over the bug without vomiting. The only caveat would be if you somehow got food poisoning...I'm not sure if that would be different. I believe Bill, another moderator here, said that in that case you can get your stomach pumped, but I'm not sure that would be necessary. I guess you'd contact a doctor and ask for guidance.
I hope you're feeling better!
Best wishes,
Denise

Thanks Denise, that's really useful info. I feel much better today, Possibly the only bonus of being unable to vomit was that I could at least keep down water! I'm going to the docs next week so I'll ask for anti-nausea meds to have to hand in case this ever happens again.
Thanks!
