Hi -

New here, hoping someone can reach out to me.
I've seen two GIs and have the same advice from them...need the endoscopy.
I need to feel a comfort level with the doctor and want to see one more (doctor shopping).
I have been eating less and not getting the regular foods down for one week.

I lost four pounds...

I know time is of the essence. Can you go on with this swallowing issue? I'm afraid I'll lose too much weight and pass out. Can people live like this? What do they do after the endoscopy? Are you able to then eat?

I have an appointment to see another GI on Monday.
Please help...

Perhaps you need to be more specific as to your problem/symptoms. Is it a swallowing problem, inflamed throat, acid reflux? You will probably get the same info from all the gi docs. They will want to do an endoscope. If it is only a throat issue then possibly you need to see an ENT for an examine. Please explain more and someone can give you better info.

An endoscopy is a procedure where the doctor uses a scope to look at your esosphagus , your stomach and your small intestine. It may tell him the source of your problem. It is not a treatment , it is only used for diagnostics. The procedure is not a big deal , so if the doctor recommended it I would go ahead and have it done as soon as possible if you are having severe swallowing problems.

Hello to you both,

I have an inflamed throat/kind of sore and difficulty swallowing most foods. I don't have any acid reflux that is bothering me at this time. I'm mashing everything up that I can as far as eating. Up until about one week ago, I was still able to eat bread. I did notice this problem on and off but thought it was due to a portions diet that I had been on. It's gotten progressively worse rather quickly. :( Right now, I'm taking Omeprazole. It seems there are good days and bad days with getting food down...do you experience this too?

What happens after the endoscopy? What is the next step?

I have not had a swallowing problem. I have been diagnosed with lpr which has caused sore throat, mucous, globus. I have had an endoscope and barium swallow test. I will have some additional testing next week. If your swallowing is as severe as it sounds you really need to decide on a gi doctor and proceed on with the scope. There is nothing to fear about it. You will be given a light sedative and the test lasts only a few minutes. When you wake up you will be pretty alert and can go on to eat, work , whatever. You will need someone to drive you after the test. The scope will tell the doctor what if anything could be causing your swallowing problem. Go get it done. Nothing to fear.
