Any good outcomes from paraesophageal hiatal hernia surgery?

There are mostly success stories about paraesophageal hiatal hernias on the forum. There's a lot of worry and scary tests, but most of the people posting about this particular repair are happy with the results.

Put the words or the initials GPEH or PEH into the search box at the top of the page.

Not all regular surgeries are successful, but most people who post about this are the unhappy ones. The ones who had success don't often post. But the PEH folks often come here looking for information because the forum comes up on a search, and they're happy and feel much better after surgery.

PEH, or as I had GPEH (giant), can be lift-threatening. We don't have much choice but to get the surgery done, because if the stomach rolls and strangles, it's a major emergency.

I had mine done 5 years ago and am still happy I had it done!

Read about the testing and all the diets and things you need to know about. There's quite a learning curve to negotiate.

Know that you have different options for surgery as well. My surgeon does not do the wrap (even though most do) in all cases he does a more taylored approach. He said if I don't have reflux there is no real reason to do the wrap and that is where most people have complications. I'm having my surgery next month and will be relieved to have it done. Feel free to message me if you need any info! I agree with Alcie, the surgery needs to be done. All surgeons told me that, you can have it down now, later or when it's an emergency but at some point it will need to be done. I also agree a lot of the people do complain about their surgeries but I believe like Alcie said people are more likely to complain about a bad result than keep checking in because of a good result. Do lots of research, meet with more than one surgeon, and read a lot of the great recovery journals here and it will really help to make your decision easier. Good luck!

Yes I did. Had surgery on 4/7/15. Had nf and am doing great. Had a hiatal hernia twisted as well as stomach twisted. Had pain going into shoulder and neck. Am so glad I had it done and say to you GO AHEAD. Can practically eat everything now except best to cut food into small pieces. Would love to eat a sandwich but not important. That day will also come. Had my surgery performed by a doctor who does bariatric surgery. I think he did a great job. No more Prilosec after so many years. I was concerned about having the right doctor after reading a post on another website.
