Hello all LPR sufferers. I wanted to post this idea for LPR treatment. I've had LPR symptoms (asthma, cough, painful speaking) for about 3 years continuously. Impedance study showed abnormal number of proximal reflux episodes and I had vocal cord erythema and changes on laryngoscopy. The following did not help my symptoms at all:
Nexium
Dexilant
Prilosec
Pepcid
Elevating head of bed
Dietary changes - seems to be no correlation with diet and the symptoms.
Recently I read an article by Jamie Koufman on Alkaline water and its effect of inactivating tissue-bound
Pepsin above pH 8.8. Please see the article here:
“Potential Benefits of pH 8.8 Alkaline Drinking Water as an Adjunct in the Treatment of Reflux Disease,” by Dr. Jamie Koufman and Dr. Nikki Johnston, Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, http://www.annals.com/toc/auto_abstract.php?id=15887
Two months ago, I started filling a Nalgene bottle up with water before work. I put about 15 drops of Alkalife pH booster drops (Basically its potassium hydroxide) and a little baking soda in it to bring the pH up to about 9.5-10. I used pH test strips to get the exact amount. I take it with me and after I eat and any time I burp or feel anything abnormal in my throat I take a little sip. I'll drink about a liter of the stuff over the course of the day. I drink a little extra after eating anything.
I'm happy to report probably about 80% reduction in the symptoms that I've been having for over 3 years. I am now singing again and exercising again normally, neither of which I could do before.
I am very cautiously optimistic about this and am going to continue indefinitely.
Welcome any comments or experiences with this.
