I've been diagnosed with GERD and a minor hiatal hernia. I don't have any GERD symptoms besides excessive burping. I've been having these breathing problems where I feel like I cant fully expand my chest, my throat feels full constantly, and I feel like I have a lump in my chest causing pressure. I've seen a cardiologist and pulmonologist to rule out heart and lung issues and both of them say I'm perfectly fine in that regard, but these breathing issues are very real. What could be causing this issues, it's really starting to impact my life. Thanks for any info!

Hi Wpenn26, I have had the same problems for over a year minus the hiatal hernia. Mine started when I had shoulder replacement surgery in February of 2014. about a month after surgery, I had trouble breathing. Shortness of breath, lump in my throat, nasal congestion. My doctors checked everything, (lungs, heart, scope into stomach, and so on.) I still have this problem 1 1/2 years later.
I was told that they had trouble intubating me during surgery. I'm wondering if they injured my throat while doing this procedure. I believe I have GERD due to trigger foods that make it flare up. If you have had recent surgery you may have the same situation. I also need help. It makes life a little tough!!

I'm in the same situation..31 year old female..suffer from gerd as well as a hiatal hernia and I get the feeling like I can't breathe as well. I do have an enlarged thyroid/goiter but my endocrinologist keeps saying that she doesn't think that's why i'm having this breathing issue. I notice that humidity makes it worse. It's not a shortness of breath feeling, it's more just like air hunger/like I just can't breathe. Went for a sleep study and it shows no apnea/oxygen was good all night. They're sending me to a pulmonologist to do lung testing next month...but I also feel like i'm having constant slight congestion as well

Hello . I have been experiencing trouble breathing as well. I have read an article about pseudo dyspnea by dr.hanna saddah. Read the article and see if it applies to you. I think it is what is happening to me.

MY HUSBAND HAS GERD, A HIATEL HERNIA, SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND CHEST PAIN, COUGH.
THE SYMPTOMS GOT SO BAD HE WAS TAKEN OUT OF WORK IN MAY. HE GAVE HIMSELF PNEUMONIA FROM ASPIRATING ACID. HE HAD A PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST WHICH WAS NORMAL, CARDIAC WORKUP NORMAL.
FINALLY REFERRED TO A SURGEON FOR OPINION. DR STATES SHORNESS OF BREATH IS FROM THE HIATEL HERNIA PRESSING ON THE DIAPRAGHM. LUNGS CANT EXPAND NORMAL. IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.
MY HUSBAND HAD TO HAVE SURGERY LAST WEEK TO DECREASE THESE SYMPTOMS. THE HIATEL HERNIA WAS LEAKING. IN LAYMANS TERMS
THE HERNIA WAS PUSHED BACK IN THE STOMACH AND THE STOMACH WAS WRAPPED AROUND THE ESOPHAGUS AND SUTURED. THIS WILL KEEP THE ACID WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE. SURGERY EFFECTIVE, SLOW RECOVERY. 30% NEED REPEAT SURGERY IN 10 PLUS YEARS.
ASK YOUR DR FOR A MAMOMETRY AND PH TEST.
