Hello, I have a history of eosiniphilic esophagitis. I have had a gastroscopy 5 timers with dilation each time. May 15 of this year I suffered from what I believe was a hiatal hernia. Day after it happened I was put on Pantaloc and a swallowed fluticasone. 7 days after, the hiatal hernia recinded (I felt a physical drop followed by a stomach gurgle). Pressure at the base of my sternum was no longer there and I could swallow food again. I kept on the Pantaloc and Fluticasone. I kept on having symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks and chest area pain. A couple of months on the drugs and I started experiencing vertigo and muscle weakness in my legs as well as lumpy throat. Spoke with the doctor and switched from Pantaloc to Omeprazole. Vertigo and weakness decreased, still present though, but a sensation of trouble breathing started occurring. Two weeks ago I cold turkeyed both drugs. I have felt better and worse. I experience light headedness and still the breathing sensation. Question is whether anyone has experienced this or not? I have been for swallowing tests, abdomen ultrasound, heart stress test and I am currently scheduled for allergy tests and ct scan and Ear/Nose/throat consult. All completed tests have comeback as normal. Before episode on May 15 I did not have any of these side effects. Can anyone relate?
Thanks, anxiously want this to be over....

Stopping PPIs cold turkey can have bad effects, when I do it I eventually get burning in my stomach all the time as the acidity rebounds. At about 2 weeks after stopping is usually when its at its worst. So you may be suffering from rebound. You could try taking some ranitidine in the interim to see if it makes you feel a little better

Thank you Andy. I had a bad bout last night. I dont seem to have acid in my throat but more of the light head and "breathing through a straw" feeling. I agree about quitting cold turkey, i didnt realize it would be so bad until i started reading about it.

Hi Kilermoose, I agree with Andy1986. But since it's been 2 weeks you did not take PPI, you should be better not taking it. My experience, I was taking PPI for 6 weeks, lost 14 lbs, can't eat anything. I get off PPI last July 24, then after took some H2 blocker and weaning from it. I had dizziness and getting weak which was the side effects from PPI. It will take a while to heal. Try having a strict diet and eat in smaller portion possible. On the other hand, just have your test done. Then after all is normal you can start healing slowly. PPI meds and H2 blocker can help but healing without it is the best path to follow (based on my experience). The acid rebound was a struggle for me. Anxiety can kick in too. ( I did prayer and meditation, this had helped me go thru it).
A lot of post about GERD diet, I learned from it. Hope you feel better.
God bless.

Thanks Tu. Prayer and spending time in the scripture really helps me too. I also just read an article about pseudo dypsnea so i am thinkkng of trying some zantac for a bit to see. I am also going to go to a naturopathy lady soon to see what she has to offer. It is soooo helpful to hear stories from people with the same issues. Somewhat like a support group.

Hi Killermoose,
The three main causes of pseudo-dyspnea or the false shortness of breath are a) esophagitis, b) anxiety, and c) panic. When I had GERD, the feeling were similar. I have to rush to ER due to the symptoms plus other things. All were normal so i am taking off meds. I been off PPI going 6 weeks and off Zantac going 3 weeks. I'm still doing the strict diet, sometimes have bitter and sour taste on my mouth that I have to deal with. Eating organic apple helped. It takes time to heal especially I went worst taking the PPI. Keep us posted as to what your naturopathy lady will tell you. Yes healing scriptures helped me so much. My anxiety is now gone.
God bless.
