Hey all,
I am 1 year post op for LINX surgery. Heartburn was gone immediately after surgery. The LPR symptoms (sore throat primarily) were greatly helped by the surgery, but as of yet not cured. I still cannot sleep flat or else there will be damage. It is definitely a different from the unbearable symptoms before surgery, but was not a complete fix for me. This leads me to consider other options. A PepTest revealed, of course, that I still have high levels of pepsin reaching my throat. (Google peptest if you're unfamiliar) Currently there are no common drugs used to suppress the effects of pepsin, but after the last few days of research I've learned of "Ecabet Sodium". It has the benefit of attaching to mucosa and offering protection while strongly inhibiting the action of pepsin. This makes it a possible treatment for LPR, of course. Why this hasn't been trialed further I have yet to understand. It comes in powder form and is only available from China/Japan I believe. I've looked into ordering it and I'm awaiting a quote. Not sure if you need a prescription, but I'm waiting to find out. Apparently its been used for a while in those countries for Gastric ulcers. Before I try it, of course, I would have to know if prolonged use would damage the GI tract in any way.. On the contrary, I've read that there were no adverse reactions in short-term use and it is being used successfully for gastric ulcers and ulcerative colitis- because of its ability to protect exposed tissues/suppress pepsin. I have yet to see studies on longterm use though. It has been given in research as 1000mg BID. I'll share any further info. Please, only post comments regarding Ecabet (ex. not LINX or your heartburn story, I would like to explore this option with this thread). Thank you!
