Hi,

I am going for Nissen Fundoplication surgery in two days time. However I am really nervous and having second thoughts about thinking of inability to vomit. Can someone give me some confidence that the positives of this procedure (Fundoplication) outweighs the side effects? please. Thank you

I had my surgery last Wednesday (9/2) and have been feeling great. All my GERD symptoms are gone. No more acid reflux, no more chronic cough. I haven't had to vomit (yet) but have been able to burp and pass gas normally. There is a little pain when burping but that's normal and will pas..
Also the neck and shoulder pain has significantly decreased. Can probably get off pain meds today.
Have been able to eat soft foods (soups, pudding, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, blended vegetables, even blended chicken).
I do get full easily and get very bloated after I eat and still have some constipation issues.
I did not get the full wrap but a 230 wrap because I had swallowing issues with my oesophagus and that's what the surgeon recommended.
I'm 30 years old and had the surgery done in FL with one of the top surgeon in the US for this procedure.
I am so happy I did it and almost feel as good as I did before the surgery without any of the reflux symptoms.

I am going to have surgery in UK and the surgeon is expert in this procedure. I am glad to learn that you can burp within a week of having the surgery done.

Be Wise. I had my Nissen done Friday in In. I was scared like you but believe me. I am so glad that it was done. I have figured out how to take my meds since the have to be crushed and have no problems getting them down since. I am on a full liquid diet till the end of the month. Many surgeons do different things. I am following what mine had told me. I'm trying to get my nourishment from blended soup. Good luck. My prayers are with you.

Don't let the inability to vomit frighten you. Make sure your surgeon gives you a prescription medicine for nausea that you can carry with you. I had my Nissen surgery over a year ago and I haven't had any issues.

Hi BeWise... The side effects during the recovery period are manageable. They truly outweigh the side effects of long term exposure to acid reflux and over use of PPIs. I had LNF on 7-31-15 and I am mostly eating everything, but in much smaller portions. I do not get hungry in the traditional sense but I know that I must eat every couple of hours to prevent low blood sugar issues. Eventually that will pass with more healing time. This is a major surgery and you need the time to heal and let your body get use to the changes inside. With all that, I am still 100% pro LNF for long term GERD/HH sufferers. Not fixing those issues can have other major complications later in life that no wants either. Good luck to you.

Thank you SharonZ and CaliJR. Your comments are really helping me to prepare for the day and boost my confidence. I suffer from Hiatal Hernia and GERD for 4 years now and I think it will only get worse as I grow old and this is the right time to address it. At least this is what my surgeon said. I was on high dose of PPI and Ranitidine. They worked initially but now they have little or no impact.

I am 3 weeks post op. I was a little lulled by the fact that it was going to be done laparoscopic, and now realize it was major surgery. As someone says, you heal quickly on the outside but the inside takes longer. I am doing well but do not have much energy. I am 69 and decided to get this over with before I got any older. I am very hopeful I can get off the PPIs in time. Cutting back this next week.
I am really glad I have plenty of time to recover, would hate to have to go back to work unless perhaps a light office job.
Glad up I had the surgery.

Fernfran. I'm 64 I had mine last Friday so not a week yet. I agree with you. Didn't realize how tired I would be. I'm still experiencing a lot of gas that will not pass so have cut back on pain meds and drinking more warm liquid. Any other suggestions would greatly help. I'm taking a stool softener also. I have felt better not having the sour taste in my throat and the chronic cough that has been persistent for years. Going slow and steady

Prekmks, oh my on the gas! I am able to burp a little, some can't and let me say, I'm just glad I am home when it comes to the gas. I think that is getting a little better but still bad.

Have had 1 pretty painful night where I just plain over ate, I don't get that hungry but whatever I had just tasted good. Wow, my stomach and abdomen swelled up and was hard, my insides hurt. Took several hours until I was able to go to the bathroom. Now, I remember to eat smaller amts. good luck, the first week was the most uncomfortable.

Had the procedure done at 8am UK time. So far no nasty pains.
The only bit which is bothering me is to unable the bladder. Initially I couldn't pass the urine at all. Now it's coming out in drops bit by bit. Nurse suggested to use one off Catheter to empty the bladder if it doesn't get better. I am trying to avoid that!!

Make sure you get up and walk around when you can, it helps to get everything moving again and helps to dissipate the gas they use during the surgery to inflate your abdomen, so it will help with the shoulder pain.

It's day 4 after my Nissen Fundoplication surgery. I am feeling very week trying different soups and smoothies and bit scared to gulp so taking sips which is unusual for me as I used to eat and drink very fast. I want to eat...errr drink more savory as I am constantly scared of getting sick. I have not experienced any heartburn for last 4 days and no reflux. However I sometimes feel taste of food in my mouth may be I am bit paranoid!
One thing which is causing discomfort at this stage is my elongated uvula due to General Anaesthesia. Did anyone suffer from this? Is there something I can do? How long does it take to heal please let me know. It feels like it is resting at the back of my tongue. One more thing I can burp with slight discomfort.

Hi could use somebody's advice/input who has been there . I had the nissen fundoplication done approximately 3 1/2 months ago n the first two months were brutal for me but have been feeling a lot better ! I went back to work about a month ago now n my energy levels hsve bee pretty low . For some reason anytime I drink coffee , energy drinks etc I get super dizzy /light headed n start feeling like crap ... Snybody have any symptoms like this before ? I got checked for diabetes n was negative . Anybody advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you , Paul !

Hey PaulS... I don't want to hijack BeWise's thread but you could be having some blood sugar issues. It may be a spike or sudden drop with your sugar levels. I am having the same issues but mostly due to an inconsistent diet, since I eat a lot less and have to eat every few hours, which is difficult. I am seeing a dietitian tomorrow, on my doctors advice, to try and get a better diet to level out the sugars. I know that too much sweets can dump into your intestines to quickly and spike the sugars making you feel dizzy.

PaulS, I am a type 2 diabetic but wanted to chime in here. I drank one of those energy drinks once, oh my, it sent my blood sugar way low and it took traight sugar and some tone to get it back up. Coffee would be similar. Could be causing you to have low BS. I had it for tears before I knew I was diabetic. Try no stimulants and see what happens.
I hear you on the low energy. I am 6 weeks post op and feel very lazy?

All of your symptoms SHOULD resolve but it is a very slow and long recovery. I have had a Nissen and also had to have two revisions to the Nissen and am currently looking at possibly a third. My hiatal continues to reoccur and is currently 6-8cm again. My last revision was in 2012 and they were unable to completely close the hiatus due to size of defect and were only able to place mesh which is apparently not holding. The fact that I am even considering this 3rd revision is because I have had significant relief post surgery. It is worth it but also is a lifestyle change. I also have many other health issues that complicate this problem. Best of luck on your healing!!!
