Hi everyone,

For the past couple of weeks I have had outer (and sometimes inner) ear pain and the feeling like water is in my ear. I went to my ENT and he saw nothing wrong with my ears. I did have a cold 6 weeks ago and I felt like i had a sinus infection because my whole right side of my face hurt and of course they wanted me to take antibiotics. I was too afraid to take the medicine because I didn't want to send my GERD in an up roar (thats what i feel started my GERD in the first place). Now here I am 6 weeks later and I'm still having on and off ear pain. Can reflux cause this? I also have an irritated throat at times and I'm wondering if I have LPR? I did just recently get my Bravo test back and I do indeed have GERD. I'm not on any medication at the moment because I'm not feeling any symptoms, well only this darn ear problem!!! Any advice would be great!!

I have chronic allergies and sinus issues,have ear pain on and off when I get cold .

Docs do not understand as they do not see any problems .

Try to prevent cold by flu shot,yes it makes huge difference and I am allergic to needles as I have Fibro and get flare up after shot but getting a shot will keep your cold at bay or at least prevent it.

Sometimes you have to take antibiotics ,there is no way around it.
I take Zantac as a I need it.

Check with another ENT.
Or talk to PCP.
They can offer insight ......sounds like sinus to me but I am not a doc.
I have facial pain on one side of infection in past or migraine when my sinuses are blocked heavily.

Ear pain, slight deafness and a feeling of trapped fluid in my ear along with terrible facial pain down the one side of my face, burning throat and sinuses were the first symptoms I had. I went to the GP 3 times insisting something was wrong with my ears and I was convinced I was going deaf. The pain in my face was terrible. The other symptoms I have followed shortly after. After a trip to A and E I was told I had silent GERD/LPR I have minimal heartburn but terrible ear, sinus and respiratory problems due to GERD. I have been tested for every allergy and all come back negative.

Thank tou guys for your reply, it's funny because the ENT I went to totally brushed off LPR and said they don't really diagnose that anymore (I don't know what planet he lives on). about a week after I saw him I got my bravo results back and it was there in stone that I do have reflux, but no symptoms in my esophagus. If I scream too loud (I have three kids...haha) my throat is sore the rest of the day and nasal decongestant makes my throat raw and my ear feels like I'm flying in an airplane all day long. I'm considering the Linx and if it can take this away then sign me up. I JUST realized all this ear pain started after I got off dexilant for my bravo study 3 weeks ago....makes sense now :-( I will talk to my GI and see what she thinks. This is no fun!!!

@trotters do you still have your symptoms? What did you do to minimize them?

Hi yes unfortunately I do, I agree it's no fun at all! I've had a battle getting consultants to agree to a diagnosis of lpr. I've had 2 fundoplications and unfortunately I still have symptoms. I had 2 different surgeons perform my op both of them are regarded as the top surgeons in the country for anti reflux surgery. It's so disheartening to accept that this will be something I'm plagued with for the rest of my life. I'm 38 and was hoping surgery would be the answer as I have the bed propped up, I sleep on a wedge don't eat before bed have started takin Zantac again as PPI only give me horrific side effects without reducing the symptoms. It's frustrating as I ended up having an impedance test after my first fundo which showed significantly more acid and weak acid to my throat area than prior to the op. It's there in black and white I have abnormal reflux but unfortunately I'm ine of the few unlucky ones who's body just hasn't responded to surgery. Nasty and misunderstood disease to have. I really hope you find some relief to your symptoms soon.

Momof3beauties, Bravo can't detect LPR levels of reflux, you need to get a 24 hr impedance pH test, that will show not only if you have reflux, but how much and how high it goes. That ENT is ridiculous, I was just being told yesterday by my GI how often they have patients bouncing back and forth between him and the ENT's with diagnosises of LPR. It also can absolutely cause ear pain, everything round your ears, nose and throat is connected so if the acid is getting up there it can easily inflame the structures. There is another LPR group I'm in and a lot of people there experience ear problems along with sinus, respiratory and throat issue. What you find is most of them also don't experience any heartburn which is what makes this so hard to diagnose and manage.

I have a lot of ear problems as well and LPR, but you may want to ask about TMJ. I have recently been diagnosed with it and it can cause a lot of facial, shoulder, and ear pain as well as fullness in the ear. I don't have any jaw pain so I found it odd, but a lot of the other symptoms match up for me. Now I'm stuck with a tooth guard at night, but anything that helps. I hope you feel better soon.
