Paraesophagel Hiatel Hernia Post op complications

I had laparoscopic surgery almost three weeks ago. More than half of my stomach was in my chest. My surgeon put the stomach back and sutured the diaphragm to make the hole smaller. I've done ok but today I had constipation and strained trying to have a bowel movement. Now I am afraid that I tore or stretched my interior stitches because my laparoscopic wounds are sore and my back hurts. I was away from home and got in a bad way. I now have MiraLax, Probiotics and Papaya Enzymes so hopefully I won't get in such a situation again but I am scared to death that I may have injured myself. Anyone have an experience that might be similar?

yes, very much so. a few times, I had to push so hard, I had tears in my eyes, in a panic I called my surgeon, who was great, and was told not to worry, that it was going to take a lot more than that, to damage the repair. so Miralax really helped to do the trick. by the way, my repair was done the same way, yours was. if you need piece of mind call your surgeon. more than likely, just take it easy, and all will be well.

Hi, I'm new. I had the lap repair last Monday. I was out of the hospital Tuesday. I really thought things would move faster in my recovery. I'm still very weak & wobbly when I walk. I'm unsteady. My insides hurt & it feels like they are going to explode. I am so tired & i plan to go back to work next Monday. My biggest concern in my breathing ~ it was so labored & I was so SOB before the surgery (1/2 my stomach was in my diaphragm). I thought I would be able to breathe better post op but I still have to stop to catch my breath. Any comments are appreciated thx

Thanks for sharing, LGSE0211. I have a giant PEH and am having lap repair plus fundoplication in a few weeks. Folks here indicate that recovery will happen but you have to take it slow and not push too hard. I'm learning a lot here, so don't give up... just keep reading and posting.

There are loads of threads if you go to the search box at the top of the page and put in some keywords.

The stitching to close a hiatal hernia is pretty strong, but if you have concerns you should absolutely see your surgeon.

lgse0211, My surgery was 3 weeks and two days ago. I wish you well, but could not have gone back to work prior to the 3 week mark. Take it easy and don't over extend yourself.
