3 days post laparoscopic fundoplication. Limited pain and can burp somewhat

Hi all,

I'm 3 days post op - day 1 and 2 I was in excruciating pain but by the end of day 2 and today (day 3) I feel almost normal - walking etc. I do have a feeling of a "lump in my throat" and only drink water, pumpkin soup, finely mashed avo or custard. Anything else feels "too big to go down comfortably" Last night and tonight I've had a bout of diarrhea (quite severe) But I haven't eaten anything different. The pain in my right shoulder is also still there.
The weird thing is that I can burp a bit, although my surgeon said it will not be possible.
I am curious about:
1. Why can I burp a bit?
2. How long will the shoulder pain remain?
3. How long does it take on average for the diarrhea to go away?

I'm not sure about the burping, I lost that and the ability to vomit.

The pain in the shoulder is annoying, try to start walking as it's actually trapped gas.

The diarrhea may come and go, but make sure you read up on a condition called "dumping syndrome."

Thanks... I am really craving "proper" food... would anyone advise against eating something like a vienna (obviously small bites and chewing it to very small bits?)

Maria81. i as well could burp, which is a wonderful treat. the shoulder pain, in my case took about a week and half, to completely go away. bowl movement ,came slowly, about 3 days after operation, completely diarrhea, and stayed that way for a good 8 weeks, until my diet changed. all though, as my diet, and ability to eat improved so did what came out. it all takes a while to find your new normal. good luck. just read your last post. at your present stage, be very careful what you try to eat. your system is very pissed of right now, and will be for a little while. follow your diet and talk to your surgeon.

Ok so back to liquids and soups? :(
It's been very hard for me to adjust, I've always been very active and played tennis every day. Which meant eating regular meals (much bigger than what I can do now) and I think I might have withdraw symptoms shocked

I too was able to burp right afterwards - just means that they didn't make the wrap too tight.

Walking is the best for the shoulder/gas pain. I would get up and walk as much as possible in the hospital and @ home wearing paths in the carpets.

Your BM's will be off for 3-5 days as they most likely had you clean yourself out the night before/that AM and you aren't eating very much at the moment.

Keep with the diet and take it slow...just walk as much as you can and it will get better.

Just saw your post. I'm 9 days post op and can still burp (lightly), yogurt is not my friend, it hits the wrap and whoa, but it settles down pretty quick. I'm concerned my wrap is to loose as I have a lump in my throat and some gurgling from the wrap up my throat at bedtime. I'm not sure if it is I'm still recovering or a loose wrap. I have been following my diet requirements though.

Hi

I am 4 days post op also and have no shoulder pain but can burp. My body is annoyed also at the change and I have diarrhoea after every very small meal I eat. My stomach and intestines groan and gurgle for an hour or 2 after. I am eating clear soup jelly and yogurt. But every day I feel a bit better and stronger. My reflux was going into my lungs and I had lung fibrosis but I have had hardly coughed since the operation so think I have made the right decision.
