I've been experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath. I have GERD and gastoparesis as well as issues with my esophagus. Could both of these symptoms be due to esophageal spasms? When I had my last EGD in January 2016, it all came back normal. The day I had the EGD my chest pain level was a 5 or 6. If this was due to esophageal spasms wouldn't the EGD shown abnormalities since I was symptomatic at the time of EGD? I have had an echo stress test and an echo for cardiac symptoms, all normal. I've done 2 pulmonary function tests, both normal. Could this all be esophageal spasms? I just don't know where to go from here and I'm really tired of the pain and no answers. PLEASE Help!

A scope procedure won't show spasms. If you had any drugs the spasms will stop.

How do you know you have gastroparesis? Did you have a barium swallow? That would likely show spasms if there are any. It's good at showing reflux.

I had echo for my heart that didn't show anything wrong. A few days later I had a heart attack. What I should have been given was a cath which wold have shown blockage in the artery! Talk to your heart doctor again.

Wow, sorry about your heart attack, hope you're doing better. I know I have gastroparesis because I've had to gastric emptying studies done. I'll check back with my GI about the spasms. I also have had an esophageal mamomtry . It did show uncoordinated peristalsis. My cardiologist has mentioned maybe doing an angiogram, it's so invasive both of us not sure it should be done. Thanks for responding 😄
