I am now on week 5 of Nexium and all it really helped was the horrible, acidic taste in my mouth that was so bad I wanted to bang my head against the wall. All other symptoms are worse: heartburn, burping, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, etc. I am hoping, as Hearty stated, that it will all settle down in another month or so, but who knows? In my research, I read that 80% of patients will respond to PPI's w/in 8 weeks, but only 10% respond w/in the first two weeks. However, what specifically does "respond" denote? Does it mean feel okay enough to suffer through the day, or does it mean feel something close to normal? Dontchya love how in the Nexium print ads people are like biking through Italy and enjoying a big glass of wine w/a plate of pasta? Um, I don't think that's going to be me anytime soon.
Michelle, I always enjoy reading your posts. I know you have IBS. Re: "trapped gas" pushing the stomach up at night -- Have you tried abdominal self-massage in the morning and before bed? I wrote about it on other threads b/c I personally find it helpful. You know it's working when ya hear the gurgles. If you spend 5 minutes massaging the ileocecal valve and around the whole system, I think you'll find it beneficial.
Has anyone else noticed that when the time-released Nexium starts wearing off (i.e. hours 23, 24, and 25, if you wait), the symptoms come back full force? I thought there would be some carry over, but right around hour 24 I feel like my stomach and chest are on fire. Hopefully this will lessen in time . . .
