@LiveJoy, I am so happy you are doing well in you weaning process, 6 months is great!!! My PPI took a toll on my body as well, during the weaning process I had symptoms that I had never had before. I also feel that taking them was the biggest mistake of my 57 years of life also. :)
I really didn't understand before taking these how hard it would be to stop or I never would have started, I don't understand why doctors don't tell you this (well maybe I do). They also don't tell you that the PPI ONLY controls the symptoms and does not stop the reflux. Like you I now research every pill that I am prescribed before I put in into my body, even the OTC ones.
As far a what to eat, after about 9 months or so, I started adding foods back in and keeping track with what cause my reflux, so I know what to stay away from and what I can tolerate. It is still a learning process in this area of managing, the key for me is smaller portions although for you with the underweight issue that may not be good.
I also use probiotics (liquid), there are several that I get from Whole Foods that I like, I also drink ginger tea (great for digestion). As far a feeling back to normal, there are days that I forget that GERD exist, but not enough of them to say I'm back to normal, it's more like a new normal with watching what I eat, how I eat, how I position sleep to manage my symptoms.
Last but not least, I find that not concentrating on my issues with GERD helps and prayer has been one of the best things to incorporate in my journey. So hang in there, you got this!!!
