Hiatal Hernia

How do you know if you have a hiatal hernia? I have a spot just under my right rib cage that causes me discomfort when I bend over sometimes, or if I eat a bit too much also. I've had an X-ray, cat scan, and been to my family doctor as well as a gastroenterologist. Nothing has shown up, and both doctors have told me there's nothing there. I've been diagnosed with mild gastritis and reflux esophagitis with eosinophils. I have a sensation of a lump in my throat, and what feels to me like a hernia on the inside. My family doctor wants to put me on Dexilant 60mg, but I am hesitant to start after reading others experiences with PPI's. Don't know what to do.

Jamie60. Glad you dropped in to our forum. We are not doctors but we want to help and make suggestions. I think your gastroenterologist would be the one to advise and diagnose if you have a HIATAL hernia. Have you looked into costochondritis? (Spelling ?) From your symptoms listed, it does sound like reflux. Help your body to heal and stay in contact with the doctor and follow the eating properly plan avoiding all the stuff you shouldn't be eating so that your body can work on healing.

You can't feel a hiatal hernia.
A PCP can order the barium swallow.
