Hey,

I have only been diagnosed with gastritis and esophagitis so far but today and yesterday I had 100% no appetite and now I feel so shaky and sick.

I'm just lying in bed not knowing what to do. I feel like I'm going to die.

You are probably feeling shaky and sick from not eating and drinking enough.

Patient21- I am sorry you are feeling so bad. I was diagnosed with gastritis and esophagitis a month ago, but have been suffering from it for over 3 months. I know it can get bad. You said you were diagnosed with those two so far, are you getting more tests done? Are you on any medication for it? It feels like hell I know. Did they say you had GERD? They told me I did and that is why I have esophagitis. It seems they came at the same time.

Hang in there. Hoping it heals fast for both of us smile

Since then I have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with mild gastritis and esophagitis. It feels far from mild. I have been on pantoprazole for about two months, until my prescription ran out and my insurance company will not pay for refills, so I am taking double the dose of OTC Prilosec. I have having a set back with symptoms since then.

Your sore throat sounds like it is from the acid reflux. I think it is possible you do not always feel it in your chest or throat, but I'm not 100%. Have you changed your eating habits? I had to cut back on coffee, can't go completely without. I also cant eat high fat foods, or sauces. Right now it seems everything bothers my stomach and acid reflux. When this first started for me, it was awful, I had the chills, stomach cramps, dizziness, I thought I had a stomach virus or the flu, but had no fever, that's when I knew something was wrong.

Try to eat small portions of anything that does not make you sick so at least you are getting nourishment. I know its hard, but try to eat something that doesn't make you sick to your stomach when you think about it. Now with me, I feel sick to my stomach even thinking about certain foods that I ate that made me feel sick.

I know, this totally sucks. I can't even imagine what an ulcer feels like. And that Is what I thought I had, that's how bad the pain was!

Hey sorry to hear about your issues. I read your story and I can relate to most but not all of it, for example the heart palpitations. I have changed eating habits numerous times to no avail. Each meal I result with a sore throat. I too have mild gastritis and esophagitis. No bacteria.

I too thought I had an ulcer. I made a food journal but it's just random when I eat a food I was okay with one day the next day it'll upset my throat.

I've lost so much weight and I was fairly thin to begin with.

I can relate to that. I sometimes fee fine eating pasta with sauce and then the next day get terrible burning and reflux from bland chicken and rice. I thinks it's different for everyone.

Yeah my palpitations got worse since this started. I had the whole cardiovascular check up done and my heart is fine. It is from the heart being in close range is the esophagus that it sort of "tickles" it during a flare up according to my cardiologist. Anxiety over this makes them worse too.

I'm sorry you can't find anything to eat. I have been reading Gaviscon is good to use for the reflux. Not the one they sell is the US, but you have to get the one in the U.K. I was thinking about getting it. When my reflux acts up I get mucus build up stuck on my throat, and it's very uncomfortable. How long have you been on the medicine? Sometimes it takes a couple weeks for it to kick in and start working properly. That was the case with me when I began pantoprazole. If that isn't working maybe ask your doc to switch you to a different one. They all don't work the same for everyone.

Yeah I've been on 40mg of omeprazole for 6months now. My doctor just says "they're all the same"

I live in Ireland and heard of Gaviscon advance so I'm going to see if my doctor can get me that.

I want to try out nexium instead of the omeprazole.

I never had any throat symptoms until 3 months into the omeprazole.

I was thinking of trying something different as well, but not sure how switching would effect how I feel rebound wise. I feel worse since I have been on the Prilosec, and I am not sure if it is because I stopped Pantoprazole cold turkey. Prilosec is omeprazole, and it only comes in 20mg tabs so I have to take two in the am and 2 in the pm to match the 2x daily 40mg pantoprazole I was on. UGH I just want it to all go away.

I think I will order the Gaviscon as well. Anything at this point.

Your sore throat could be a side effect of the meds. You should read on the side effects.

Yeah I know I really wish it would all just end too. It's completely ruined my quality of life.

Yeah I read a lot about how the medication could also have lowered my stomach acid so much that then my body produces more when I eat because there isn't enough and this causes the redux.

I'm going to my doctor in the morning as I'm not just standing for being fobbed off. I want to try nexium and then I want to be seen by a GI.

My doctor is clueless about this whole thing I think. But he likes to act like he knows it.

Hopefully you can work out something with your insurance company and get some prescription drugs rather than OTC, or more ultimately just a solution.

My main priority right now is to find out whats causing it.

Hey guys nice to connect with you. I have been having this problem for four months. It started with bad burning throat. Have been having intense anxiety period. Crying almost daily not mecessarly because of pain but how long it has been going on. It wears on you. There been times when burning throat has gone down. I had symptoms of sour, salt taste, burning throat. When these symptoms come they stay for long time and then new symptoms comes. Do u think its all in our head. Most of my family thinks so. I do take Gaviscon Advance from UK. I feel it helps. Lrts help each other out. We ll fight this together.

I don't think it's all in our heads. I do believe anxiety can add to it but there is more than likely an underlying reason.

I agree, it's great to connect and talk with others.

I will be going to my doctor in the morning and I will update then.

Do you have throat burning and pain each day? I know you said it calms but I have it everyday. I can't stand it.

I think anxiety does make symptoms worse butI think its not all in our head either. Take necessary test but don't panic. Lets be proactive but not too neurotic either. Over last few months I am sure we have done lots of research, lets not overdo it. I think it may make it worse for us. What d u guys think. Lets ask each other if we have any questions?

Yes Patient 21 I do and I think its scary symptoms for us. But we are both in this together. Go to your doctor ask him everything in your mind if u want write it down. Chewing baking soda gum helps as well as Gaviscin Advance

Ask your doctor about twice a day 40mg PPI. That is the standard therapy for LPR. So 80mg daily and take Gaviscon Advance from UK after meal. You are going to heal.

Sorry to hear LPR, have you seen a GI doc for a diagnosis? Do you notice any triggers, like certain foods or drinks that may be making it worse?

Patient - I hope your doctor's appointment goes well. It does seem like they are quick to write off a diagnosis, without looking further into the cause. They never gave me a reason for it, I pretty much summed it up myself as being from NSAIDs and the practioner agreed.

I also don't feel like they clarified why I have esophagitis either. She wrote that one off as GERD, although I never had heartburn before my stomach issue started except for once in a while.
The low stomach acid makes sense. I am reading a lot about how taking PPI's are bad for you and makes the problem worse. So how to heal without them?

Do you feel like your gastritis is healing? I am still dealing with stomach burning and now worsening reflux.

LPR go away -, yes I will ask my doctor about a higher dosage. You're right, I've done a lot of research. Too much probably.

FearBug - I too wonder if mine was NSAIDs but I wasn't taking any prior to this happening. But have done over the years.

Yes, how to heal without them would be good to know but risky as if you stop your ppi you are allowing more acid to be part of your reflux thus damaging your body. I don't feel like my gastritis is getting any better. With the gastritis Ill always have pain at some point in the day. The sore throat is 100% constant.

The most remarkable thing is I have burning throat but when my Gi doctor did endoscopy he didnt see much inflammation in throat, everything else is clear except mild gastritis. Sometime I think the original infection bother some nerves and thats why we r getting pain. At this point I feel lost. I didnt have digestion issue before this was out of nowhere! How bout u guys? Did it come on suddenly

So I went to see my doctor and here's what I got..

I got Gaviscon advance.

He doesn't want to change my ppi as he thinks I will get excessive diarrhea (which I basically have with omeprazole).

He is sending me to a GI who will more than likely do a colonoscopy.

And he is sending me to an ent.

The miserable thing about all of this is I'm public with no health insurance so that means that I have to wait months to be seen. Ent waiting list is about 8 months. sad

LPR Go away - Mine did come on suddenly. It started out with nausea, then a day or two the burning. I believe it was the Advil and alieve I was popping because I had an infected tooth and had a root anal done a month prior to symptoms.

Patient21- I hope the Favicon helps you. I will have to order some online, as I live in the states. Sorry you have to wait so long for the extra tests. Yeah I know what you are saying about needing the PPI's so that the acid does not do more damage.

Question for you both- What do you eat to keep your gastritis from flaring up even worse? I am trying to eat mild, but it seems no matter what I eat, I get burning, and reflux. Do you drink coffee? I drink two a day, as I can not function without it. I am highly addicted. Been drinking it since I was 13, which is probably part of my gastritis as well :P.

Ill let you both know if the Gaviscon advance helps after I've used it for a while.

I try to really eat anything I can manage but last few days I've been bedridden and unable to stomach any types of foods.

One thing I found good at least in keeping the pains at bay was 2x wheetabix (a high fibre cereal) and banana added.

But everything I eat, even that meal, causes a sore throat.

I don't like coffee, I don't smoke or drink alcohol either so that's a plus I guess.

Just hang in there. Look forward to doing a good activity at least once a day. Trying to distract your mind as much as possible. I cry in front of my parents and I am a grown man. Not because I can't handle the pain but because its everyday. Doctors don't seems to be urgent in anyway. People around don't think its emergency. But the one that is going through pain think it is. They all say try to ignore it and it will go away. But it is not that easy, how do you ignore something that is going on for months. I will pray for all of us. We are going to be fine. Just believe.

Ignore it and it will go away is such a stupid thing for them to say. My throat is the most painful for me.


We will get through it you're right.

So far the Gaviscon advance is pretty good for the throat but nothing amazing. It seems to buy me a bit of time before my throat gets burned.

No one could possibly understand what this feels like unless they have gone through it. Ignoring it is easier said than done. You can't ignore the feeling as if you had just swallowed acid, and it's traveling down to your stomach. This can be very debilitating. I used to exercise almost every day, and now during bad days, I just barely make it home rough work. I am tired all of the time. Life has not been he same. It sucks.

One good thing, I found a discount coupon online so I was able to get my prescription today for the patoprazole I was on before taking the OTC drug. Thank goodness because the last week off of it have been pure hell.
Patient21 I hope your throats gets to feeling better soon, that can't be easy to live with on a daily basis.
I also have this pressure type feeling in my face and head when the reflux gets really bad. Not sure what the heck that is, but I assume it's maybe the nerves getting effected or something to that effect.
I hope we all heal fast. It was probably easy to get, but seems really hard to heal. My fear is that the medicine for the gastritis started the reflux, because I do not remember it being like this when my stomach issue started.

Yes I completely agree with you. I had gastritis then started my ppi and got reflux up to my throat.

I'm wondering if I suffer from low stomach acid. I have been reading this
