Hi Everyone..Am new in the forum, i found myself here after doing so much research on what am suffering from.Am a 34 year old male and i developed my symptoms almost 3 years ago...it all started as a cough/flu symptoms..i went to an
open clinic and i had some antibiotics...the flu went away but after a few days i started feeling a scratchy feeling in my throat.....i never took it serious..i initially thought it was because i was a smoker and that it was effects of my smoking habits...but the scratchy feeling kept on and on and on.....i eventually quit smoking..but it never stopped..if anything it became worse and worse. In the meantime i started having heartburn consistently...especially when i drink alcohol..am one of those people who drink once or twice a week...it got worse and worse and became an every day issue for me..i went to see an ENT..i was put on some nexium..i also did an endoscopy but everything came back normal.... all along nothing seemed to improve...I also started having shortness in breath and started snoring...Initially i was 175 lbs but i gained weight to 206 at max and i thought maybe its because i was a bit overweight...am 6'1 so i didnt look bad...just chubby!....My ENT thought i had allergies and he prescribed allergy medicines but nothing improved..i decided to change to another doctor after a year and half...that doctor said i had sinus problem after i had some scans..he requested i do sinus surgery which i did and it improved the breathing a lot...i used to feel as if my nose is clogged and my eyes were always red.....all that improved after the sinus surgery..but my throat and my Heartburn got worse....i started seeing another reflux surgeon and he prescribed pantoprazole for me...this stopped my heartburn (i was taking omerprazole before but the moment i stop taking even for a day then i would get heartburn immediately)...with pantoprazole i can stay for a week without heartburn....now my most annoying and frustrating issue i have is with my throat...It's getting worse each day..am so worried...i have this burning sensation on throat and neck that will never end..i also this feeling of something is stuck in my throat and also the need to clear my throat..it becoming very painful now and am thinking probably it will get worse.....am still taking pentaprazole once a day...i have done manometry, PH impedance test and i have another endoscopy scheduled early next month but this is killing me....am almost giving up...am so stressed..i don't know if there is anyone out there who is suffering like me or who suffered like me and had it cured. It's taking a toll on my day-day life...i feel like my voice has also changed and its a bit raspy....is there any one out there who has the same problem?...or anyone out there who had the problem treated?
Thank you in advance
Bob.

Hey Bob,
Sorry to hear about
it. It's horrible. I have similar throat symptoms to you. My throat as of the last 3 to 4 months has been really bad. All the symptoms you mention I have. My voice is so quiet because I can't talk loud without pain.
I have read many stories and you can beat it.
Many cases are different, some fade off or die down, some are ongoing, some require higher dosages of ppis, some need surgery.
Even on a ppi it can take up to 3 months to notice a considerable difference in lessening symptoms.
You're not alone and many have the issues you have.
Normally your GI should give you recommendations based on your pH levels and manometry testing on what you should do.
Have you tried the other factors like diet, raising the head of the bed, etc..
How was your manometry test? Is your LES properly functioning?

Thank you patient 21.
I have not yet seen the doctor after i did the manometry..Am waiting to do the upper edoscopy again so then i can see him.
I have been thinking it could be throat cancer..that thought never goes away.It scares the hell out of me.
Will let you know what my doc says after my next visit next month.

Good, do keep us updated. Try not to be stressed about
cancers as the symptoms you've said fall directly in line with reflux.
I know it can be worrying though

When you say you have heartburn, do you mean your stomach burns?

@cocktail.....its not really stomach burns but rather the feeling that someone gets around the chest area when there is too much acid reflux...in layman's language its called heartburn

If you get your stomach acid neutralized (PPIs or ranitidine, or whatever works for you) it will still take weeks at least for the esophagus to heal itself and stop hurting. Endoscopy will show how it looks.
Next, you need to find out WHY you have reflux. Maybe your doctor will have a clue when you see him next about
the test results. Since you don't need to take your PPI every day, which is unusual, you need to consider if something you are eating once a week or so is triggering the reflux. Look up "food journal," "trigger foods," and "food intolerance" in the search box at the top of the page.
