You don't have to be sedated for endoscopy. In fact it's really only for the doctor doing to scope, keeping you from gagging and squirming. In many countries, and with many doctors in the USA, sedation is not used or even offered.
I had my first endoscope without anything, and for that matter, had my first colonoscopy with nothing too. I eventually decided I was pretty unhelpful to my doctors, so agreed to Propofol ONLY for later procedures. I absolutely refuse, in writing, accepting Versed! I have had Versed, without knowing and without my permission and had awful loss of memory for days after, and for events of days before the (different) procedure. Versed also does nothing for pain, only makes you forget everything. With Propofol I sleep comfortably and wake with all my mental faculties.
If your doctor refuses to do endoscopy without sedation, you can see another doctor.
PS: I was never offered sedation for wisdom teeth, but it wasn't much fun. Dentists can't use Propofol because it requires an anesthesiologist.
