I am a 60 yo female and had the surgery 5/24. I wanted to share my experience with you. I had a 7cm hiatal hernia, chronic cough, constant acid after two 40 mg omeprazole (where the first surgeon told me it was impossible for this to occur), and frequent vomiting. The coughing had been years long, resulting in many different meds for asthma, none of which controlled the symptoms.
My GI wanted a second surgical opinion as the first said I was not a good candidate and just needed to lose weight, raise my bed, stop coffee and carbonated drinks ( which I had for quite awhile).
Second surgeon reviewed my records, and said the surgery with 360 wrap would definitely solve my problems.
Many pre op tests later, my date arrived.
Surgery lasted 1.5 hrs; I awoke with no pain, at all. I realized when got to my room that I had no acid taste, and could talk more than one sentence without a single cough! I stayed in the hospital 29 hrs; first 26 hours only ice chips and an IV. No pain meds needed. My first two weeks I will be on a full liquid diet. At the hospital my only meal was two hours before I left, warm tea and creamy vegetable soup. I swallowed with no problem and no nausea, so I was good to go home.
The first night home I was moving slowly and would get twinges in my lower right side just above my waist. No slits there, so I assume gas.
Ok was home alone, and afraid I would have a problem but once I got into bed I fell right to sleep, waking every 2 hrs for a bathroom run, darn IV fluid. On day two, was up and downstairs no problem, ate about
2 oz plain yogurt and tea, two protein drinks for my lunch, dinner and snacks. Felt some chest congestion and when tried to cough or use the breathing tube thing, hurt to cough.
Day three I could remove the gauze and shower, felt extremely dizzy and had to rest before, during and after drying off, again as dressed, and made it downstairs and had to nap. 2 hrs later, awake from my nap, I had some yogurt. I was too tired to walk, as went outside on front porch and down two steps when I was overcome with exhaustion, so came back inside and took another hour nap. Three hrs in the four I was up was surprising. Just so weak and tired. Had two protein drinks spread over the rest of the day to get the protein in. Chest very congested and tight, and had temp of 99.3 (my normal is 97.2), and I felt warm. Went to bed early as just so tired.
Day 4: slept through all night, and can sleep on side, been years as I would cough so hard. No fever, not exhausted just tired and move slowly to avoid the twinges. Had runny oatmeal for bfast, pudding snack, lemon water, protein drink, a little yogurt and broth today. No problems swallowing. Can talk without coughing at all. Have small burps, don't hurt. It is just amazing, I love my surgeon!
