KCnutt: Do you have a hiatal hernia? If you do it's my understanding that there is a newer surgery called the Linx procedure and it gets rid of GERD permanently. No medications will ever work according to what I've heard or current procedures. I've had hiatal hernia and GERD for 16 yrs. now. It just came back last week with a vengeance due to severe stress. I ended up in the ER. Taking Nexium and had to go onto Zoloft because I was having severe Panic Attacks because my throat closed up and I could breathe. Still having some issues but somewhat better on the meds. Hate taking meds. I haven't checked out This Linx Procedure yet but do plan to. The surgery you are having may cause more problems from what I've read. Sometimes these doctors just do what good for them and not you. Take Good Care.
I will just add, while I was/am skeptical and afraid of the nissen, I opted this over the linx and after several professional opinions and research. The thought of a fairly unproven method and having metal on my insides seemed risky and more unnatural. Just my opinion, and time will tell if my nissen was the right decision, but it's been used since the 1950's with improvements along the way based on trial and error and advances in technique. Good luck whatever you decide.
