 have had the tightness in throat.  I was on aciphex for 5 weeks with no change.  I changed to prevacid and it has helped a little.  My doctor told me that if you have acid reflux bad when it get in your throat the acid make your throat get raw and causes it to swell or tighten up.  He has told me not to worry cause it wone swell shut and if it bothers me a lot to take some benadryl and it will help with the swelling.  I take benadryl at night cause that when my throat feels the tightest.  It helps me.  But you should talk to your doctor about it and see if he thinks it will help you.

In mid to late September I had a pretty severe flare-up after an endoscopy that had dilated a stricture. Two nights after the procedure I could feel something I was sure was acid shoot up my throat. For weeks afterward I felt tightness in my throat. It was especially bad after I ate. I had a second endoscopy on December 1 and the doctor saw an area of my esophagus that was defintely irritated. He did a biopsy but fortunately it was not Barrett's -- just a small area of irritation/inflammation.

I am on Nexium -- 20 mg twice a day to help it heal. My gastro doctor also prescribed a liquid called Carafate. It's apparently for uclers but can calm irritation. It helped calm my throat down. After a bit the tightness went away. Has your doctor suggested an endoscopy? It would be one way to determine the condition of your esophagus and whether it is inflamed, causing the sensations you are feeling. You might also sleep a little easier knowing that you don't have a stricture that could result in choking, or if there is a stricture it could be dilated.

I never heard of trying cocktail/pickled onions. In fact, I thought I read somewhere that onions are to be avoided. Interesting that it actually helps you.

Have you tried the other techniques suggested here and elsewhere? I adopted several of them and I believe they have helped. I sleep on a wedge pillow -- hate the thing but it does help. I wake up during the night, but it's due to discomfort from sleeping at an angle. I don't eat three hours before bedtime. I avoid large meals and have lost some weight. I'm also a lot more careful about what I eat and drink.

At its worst I was really suffering. I was in terrible pain and sometimes thoght that it would never get better. It did, though. Try to stay positive. Hope you feel better soon.

You've been given great advice. I've had reflux for yrs and currently taking Prolisec 40mg once a day. I have been on a couple of meds over the yrs, because it seems that I have to switch from time to time.

I think an Endoscopy is a good idea, at least you may know what's going on. I have experienced the tight throat on occasion which generally sends me to the ER for a cocktail. I have tried all kinds of home remedies in the past and have spent a ton of money on remedies, but the best thing is to monitor food intake. Stay away from stuff that bothers you, and, I know it isn't the easiest thing to do......But, do your best. Also walk and drink plenty of water if you can.


I had a weight problem just a short time ago, so started drinking Boost & Ensure + combo of meds keeping reflux and anxiety down enabled me to eat and put a couple of pounds on.

I've had a tightness in my throat and sometimes I feel that I'm choking.  I have a constant lump in my throat and my barium swallow showed that I have vigorous reflux, though the endoscopy showed that my esophagus is normal.  Maybe it is LPR?

I have had bad luck finding a good GI to even care or help me out!  But when I do find one, I will ask him/her if I could also try benadryl or carafate.
