Am I at risk of getting esophageal cancer?

Hi, I'm 21-years-old, 5'8" (173 cm) and 148 lbs (67.13 kg).

I eat dinner pretty late and sleep right after (it's a habit). I've had GERD and chronic nausea for about 2 years, now.

I'm taking Risperdal, Zoloft, and Inderal. I used to be on Nexium.

I have also been suffering from increasingly recurring diarrhea, which I'm assuming is from indigestion.

A few days ago, I had really bad chest pain for about 4 hours until I took Advil. That cured it and hasn't come back since, but I was just wondering what the cause of that heart pain could have been.

The oh-so-reliable Dr. Google said all of my symptoms could lead to cancer of the esophagus and I just wanted to confirm on here if there was any truth to that.

Iank, you need to work on changing your habit of a late dinner & going to bed right away. Stay away from foods that irritate the stomach. There are many self help options available that will help you, you just have to be willing to make the changes. My opinion of Dr Google is this; he/she is rarely right so I don't bother going there. If I were to go that route I would be considered a ticking time bomb, I have better things to do with my time.

I've been doing it for the past two years, and nothing has happened, aside from gaining a little weight, but if you think I should change that habit, I will try. I don't have trouble swallowing so I guess I'm not at risk of getting esophageal cancer or Barrett's Esophagus, even if I don't break that habit, right?

There is no way for anyone to predict your risk for getting cancer of the esophagus. I'm assuming that you had an endoscopy for your diagnosis, did it show any abnormalities?

I haven't had any endoscopy done; I don't want to get one done unless I experience serious symptoms. I don't want to worry my parents unnecessarily.

I highly doubt I have cancer, so I don't think it's even necessary to get an endoscopy done unless I experience trouble swallowing.

Lank, don’t ignore your symptons. Don’t space them out of your mind. Take corrective action before you screw up your esophagus and who knows what else. Which you will in time.

How long will it take for you to permanently damage your body? Hard to say. Since you are young, you’ve got quite a few years before your bad habits catch up with you. Our local medical practice requires endoscopy after 5 years of Gerd. Buy why go there? I suspect that all you must do, is to stop eating about 3 to 4 hours before going to bed.

Heart disease is called “the silent killer” because so many men had no idea that they had heart trouble till carted off to the hospital. Whatever you have, it’s not silent. Pay attention to what you’re body is saying...
