Help! Acid Rebound

I'm new here and new to the whole GERD scene in general. I'm from the US but am lucky to still be covered by my parents insurance cause I'm 24, you can be dependent up to 26 now here.

Initially my doc just gave me omeprazole 40mg and my symptoms went away, but started popping back up here and there. Just the fact that the omeprazole wasn't stopping the reflux was enough to get a reference for a GI visit. And yea, your doctor has to sign off to see the GI here too. I think you should nag your doctor more, he'll give eventually. Another factor for me was my family paid their deductible for the year; if I waited till new year for an endoscopy, it would've cost me well over a thousand, instead of the 750 it ended up costing.

Have you ever had an endoscopy? I had my first one yesterday.

Did you doctor suggest going from 80mg to 40mg to start your weaning off process? That sounds like too much of a drop. At this point, you may want to supplement with something like Pepcid before bedtime. You can go back on Protonix and try and reduce your dosage at a much slower pace. Your gastritis has probably healed, but it does take a long time to wean off of PPIs. Rebound acid doesn't go away as fast as we may like. As far as paying for an endoscopy it can cost anywhere from $1,500 - $10,000.

My doctor actually told me to just stop taking the protonix all together. I had to make an appointment to tell him that I am worried about having extreme acid rebound so he then told me to just take one every day for 2 months then stop completely. I am glad I didn't stop all together.. I feel like the rebound would of been much worse!

I am going to make an appointment with my doctor again this week and hopefully he will order an endoscopy so I can FINALLY get some answers. It's scary when you have stomach pain and have no idea how bad it is in there.

For my endoscopy, they put me to sleep so they could put a scope down to check everything out. Mine revealed I have GERD. I was prescribed pantoprazole which I'm currently in the process of getting off of. (I have been on it for a little over 3 years)

I had acid rebound, such as nausea, regurgitation and heartburn, and a general "burning" feeling. Some of the symptoms took a few days to go away, some took about a month.

Maybe 80mg to 40mg is too big a jump for you.

My insurance covered my multiple endoscopy procedures. I had no out-of-pocket expenses.

I have weened off for about a month and now have gone two weeks completely stopping PPI's after being on them for pretty well 5 years (I had brief time periods of stopping them here and there). I have had the pain and burning in my stomach intermittently and quite a bit of heartburn although not as bad as I remember it before using PPIs. Like you I am from Canada, in my twenties and was never given an endoscope before being given PPIs.

I have made some life style changes that have been helping. I am going on two weeks tomorrow no alcohol, eating small mostly alkaline low carb meals/snacks throughout the day and Chamomile tea with raw organic honey at night which really helps my stomach/acid. I have also added melantonin 1mg before bed time as I have heard good things with it and heartburn.

I am taking it week by week as some days are better then others. I have also found that dairy is a trigger for me, yogurt, sour cream and excessive cheese has really hurt my stomach. So just be mindful of foods you can't tolerate. Also I can't hit the gym as hard as I use to, running really gets the burn going so I have been biking more. From what I read you should give it 2 to 3 months and see where your at because from what I gathered that's how long it takes some times to recover from rebound.
