There are 2 different classes of gerd medications. One class are h2 blockers such as Pepcid and Zantac. Another class are the PPIs such as Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix.
Now as far as I know, you can take both a PPI and an H2.
For me (in the past), I took Protonix twice a day (40mg once before breakfast and 40mg once before dinner) and Pepcid (40mg) at bedtime. For me, it was very helpful having both medications.
Talk to your doctor and see what he/she can suggest for you.
Good luck.
