Everyone's case is a bit different. If meds are working for you, that's awesome!
I had GERD and a small/medium hiatal hernia for over a decade. All I needed to manage my symptoms were some changes to my diet and some PPI meds (Nexium, then Protonix). For some people, that's all they need and are fine. Hopefully, that is what your case will be. So, don't panic!
Now, I did have to finally have surgery when my entire stomach eventually herniated into my chest and ended up partially compressing a lung. But that is not a common occurrence! So my surgery was not solely to relieve GERD, but to repair the anatomical problem.
