It's Barrett's - I had it too. The PPI's are acid blockers. So they stop acid from being produced. He's probably doing the endoscopy to see if it's Barrett's and might then move you to Nexium or something like that, if he feels it's necessary. Nexium fixes esophageal damage done from the acid. But Omeprazole is very good too to help with the acid reflux/GERD. If there is no damage, you may not need the Nexium. As for the cancer, I don't really know what can/cannot cause it. I was pre-cancerous and have fully recovered. Sadly, my dad wasn't so lucky and passed at 82 from esophageal cancer. I wouldn't want you to imagine though that it's going to happen to you.
