Had my Fundoplication 12 months back and Ive been doing great, burping slightly though and was curious if its normal to feel food going past the wrap it makes food feel though its getting stuck but actually doesnt. If you know what mean a response.would be greatly appreciated.

The only advice I can give you is to make sure you are still chewing your food to an almost liquid state and to continue to eat slowly. Sometimes as we get further into our recovery and start to feel better, we tend to forget to do these two things.

Thank you Sharon for your advice. I'm a worrier. We do forget, I think its natural instinct because after 4-6 weeks of liquid diet, then the soft one you just eat normally after it and can sometimes forget.

yes, it is for me. at 2 years post. but a lot less, than were your at, that should improve. SharonZ offer the critical mantra. chew, chew, chew.

Try to continue eating soft foods - not the way we had to after the surgery and liquid diet but just softer foods - with gravies and soups. OR drink something with your meals - low sodium tomato juice (because now we can, yay!), prune juice, any other vegetable juice or fruit juice with no added sugar. And chew well. Eat slowly. Smaller, frequent meals are still better than one large meal. And continue to do those 20 minute walks after meals.

Fundoplication surgery, hi I am not 8 weeks post-op Nissan fundoplication surgery. I really feel good now, but have developed the dumping situation or days now. Any Thoughts?

Janis:

Watch your consumption of sugar and dairy, try to continue to eat small meals, and increase your fiber intake with things like oatmeal and whole grains. I found that not drinking a lot of liquid during my meal helped. Too much fluid seems to push food through your system too quickly.

Thanks Sharon, I will try what you suggested. I am still on soft and moist foods, getting hungry now. Does this dumping go away in time?

Yes, it does go away - sometimes not as quickly as you would like. You've had major surgery and your system needs a chance to calm down. Just be careful not to become dehydrated. If the symptoms continue call your surgeon because there is a prescription called Questran that may help.

I'm scheduled for Nissen fundoplication in a month. Wondering if you really need to have someone stay with you when you come home from the hospital, and, if so, for how long?

I think it would be advisible to have someone stay with you for a couple of weeks. You will have some discomfort and be very fatigued.

I was due to have my surgery on Feb 7th..but it had to be postponed due to a really good cold with deep cough I caught 1 week before my surgery. Now scheduled for March21...so the wait is back on!

Hi everyone that is or had Nisses Funoplication surgery. I suffered for 20 Years with severe gerd, gastritis, esphogitis. I had Nissan fundoplication surgery 8 weeks ago. I can finally say I feel so healthy and pain free!
I believe this is the best surgery to solve gastro problems.

I can't believe how quickly 12 month's have passed since my nissen fundoplication. The only issue I have no is a mild shortness of breath that comes and goes since last June( since I removed a carpet and cut it up) but touch wood it's manageable and also not felt any reflux on twinges when I over eat but swallowing is 100% amazing touch wood smile The mild breathlessness fells like gasping but it doesn't come all the time like i said once or twice per week and then I think about it and it comes back again. How is everyone? Fyrcat how was your operation, did everything go ok? SharonZ you commented on my swallowing, I chewed slower and stopped thinking about it and touchwood everything is goes down smoothly. I have a new focus now though I have to diet my new motivation is lose abit of weight. I've put on a stone and half since my operation last year.

Hi John..I started my own “journey”...and you can see my progress there. But in a nutshell..this has been a friken breeze!. I felt like crap coming out of anesthesia, spent one night in the hospital and was released at 3:00 the following day. My husband stopped at Starbucks on the way home and I sipped on a white chocolate mocha going home, and it was divine! No pain since the first day, mine was done laparoscopically, been on liquids/purees until last night which is one week out of surgery. Ate a half of a tiny hamburger and 1/4 of a twice cooked baked potato. All went down fine, no food sticking. Like all of us wrappers, I can only eat a little at any given time, but it’s all good. All my fears as to how I was going to feel or how I would be after the surgery are completely erased. I have a very skilled surgeon,Dr. Greg Jossart out of CPMC in San Francisco, he had been doing this procedure for years, and does 100/year. I believe my success is because of his skill, and I had a full wrap. I appreciate you asking, and wish you and everyone here good success and quick healing! Cathy

It's great to hear that you're doing well and feeling better since the operation. Also eating well as well, that's fantastic news. I felt a bit rough as well coming out of surgery. I remember panicking and I was like oh, I remember now i had an operation. White chocolate Mocha that sounds amazing. I was like, Puree food for 4 weeks, then gradually went onto a softer diet and moved to a normal diet around June. I'm glad you're not having any pain. It's been over 12 months for me now it's gone so fast and I haven't felt any sort of reflux symptoms like the burning, food getting stuck etc. All though my food felt though it was sticking a few weeks back but it's normal now (it was my fault as i wasn't chewing enough) You're welcome and thank you, I really appreciate it.

John, so happy the surgery went well for you, and you have a year behind you! I cannot wait to say I have reached that milestone. I have noticed subtle changes for me since the surgery. My teeth in the morning feel slippery and hydrated(if that makes sense) before my surgery my teeth felt sort of abraded ...I’m guessing the acid coming up at night. I can bend over without feeling acid coming up. On occasion pre surgery, maybe 2-4 times a month in the middle of the night I would wake up to bile/acid in my larynx and it burned like a mother..it took 15-20 minutes to clear it off and go back to sleep. No more throat clearing and my horseness in my voice is gone. I always assume it was post nasal drip...so I call this a total success so far! 😌

The only issue i have had over the last few months was that mild breathlessness that comes and goes. That actually came on when late in June last year. I decided to decorate my bedroom and i was fine after painting but when i began to cut up the carpet and put it into bags I started getting mild breathlessness like the Asthma sensation which I had never suffered with previously until I cut and bagged that carpet but other than that I been great.

I know how you feel and the acid was awful pre-op. I'd wake up like you and feel that burning sensation in the back of my throat. The worst was not being able to swallow properly but now thank God, I can smile and touch wood it will continue to feel this great and I hope you continue to feel great also. I had the swallowing problem for about five years.

I had problems swallowing steak sometimes, but the worst for me was raw broccoli. I haven’t tried that yet, and I won’t for sometime. For the most part, chewing food really well pre op helped a lot with swallowing. So being post op, it comes almost second nature to continue doing the same. The big difference, is I had to drink a lot of water while eating to help the food to go down without sticking. Not doing that now.
I agree, knock on wood that not only you, but so many who have had this surgery continue feeling great. Im so early in my recovery, and it has all gone so perfect, I’m hoping that it continues this way for me as well!

Steaks and meats were awful for me, I actually couldn't eat most things for about 5 years. I learnt what i could cope with and what I couldn't cope with but thankfully for both of us and a lot of other people on here we can all swallow properly again which is superb. I do genuinely feel the best I have felt in terms of eating, swallowing and not having heartburn or reflux symptoms id say 7 or 8 years.
