Electric feeling and heart palpitations with GERD

Hi everyone!

I was recently diagnosed with GERD and have been sick ever since. I don't have much issue with heartburn or even acid reflux, but instead intense heart palpitations and an awful feeling of electricity running through my body and head, especially at night. I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks as it wakes me up at night. Does anyone else have this experience? I am on a ton of meds, Omeprazole, Ranitidine, Baclofen and 2 different kinds of blood pressure meds due to all of this raising my blood pressure. I feel like I had a normal, happy life and then all of a sudden struggle to get through each day. I am super careful about what I eat and am totally laying off any kind of sugar, coffee, wine, and most fruit.

I would love to hear if others have these symptoms! Thanks so much in advance!

Sounds like a combination of stress and anxiety. Anxiety can definitely cause an electric feeling in your body and keep you up at night. GERD can be very frustrating and stressful. It would be helpful to find ways to calm yourself down and find things that relax you. When I get that electricity feeling from anxiety, I like to go for a walk outside. The combination of fresh air and walking seems to do a decent job at calming me down when I'm feeling anxiety from my GERD symptoms.

It has nothing to do with anxiety. From what I have read from other sites, the vagus nerve can get irritated which then causes the electric feeling. My GERD doctor recognized the description, but I just wanted to hear from others if they had those also.

I don’t know if my heart palpitations are from GERD or my PFO but I get that strange feeling like electricity also, I didn’t know what it was from, thanks for the info about the vagus nerve!

You are welcome. Stay away from all sugar, especially refined sugar, and caffeine - it helps a lot!

How was your GERD originally diagnosed? If you are experiencing palpitations that are interfering with your sleep cycle, you should probably make an appointment to see your cardiologist. And the palpitations can most certainly be due to anxiety.

Sharon, again, it has NOTHING to do with anxiety. As my gastroenterologist explained and as I have also read from many others, the vagus nerve can get irritated with acid reflux. A cardiologist can't do anything about it as there is no other treatment other than dietary restrictions. I was diagnosed by 2 different doctors after endoscopies and via my symptoms, probably just like everyone else.

I think it most likely has nothing to do with your heart/palpitations, and is just stuff coming back up the esophagus - This "feeling" can definitely feel like palpitations, but it probably is not...I know because I had the same thing.

But, palpitations can be caused by anxiety - not necessarily in your case.

Of course they can, but that is not the kind of palpitations I am talking about.
