I have newly been diagnosed with GERD & silent reflux (affecting pharynx). I rarely feel acid coming up but went to my GI with the feelings of a lump in my throat that would not go away. Endoscopy revealed gastritis, one very small ulcer, and inflammation of the gastroesophageal junction. The ENT found mild irritation on the vocal chords/pharnyx (correct?) and suggested I up the Protonix (40 mg) twice a day. GI agreed today on the dose for 8 weeks. I go back to GI and ENT in two months for a follow-up. GI wants ENT to scope again to see if pharnyx has healed. I tested negative for H.Pylori both with immunohistains and breath test.

I don't like the idea of the medication and hope to control symptoms with diet. I have a book called "Dropping Acid" written by an ENT that describes a low-acid diet and today GI suggested I try the FOD MAPS diet (gluten-free and dairy-free). I am sleeping on a large wedge to elevate during sleep.

GI said today long term he would recommend the LYNX procedure with the magnets. That sounds scary!

Any thoughts or helpful hints?

The tricky thing about LPR (silent reflux) is that you often don't feel the reflux itself....just the reactions from your body after it happens. (thus the "silent" part). This makes controlling it much harder than regular ol' GERD. LPR also often happens while you are asleep, as it can often be a result of a structural defect that allows stomach acid back into your esophagus while you are lying down.
So with that in mind, controlling silent reflux through diet is often not as successful as controlling GERD. I tried for a number of years...but if there is a hole in the bucket, there is only so much your can do until you either have to fix the hole or learn to live with the leak...so to speak.

What is your root cause of LPR? Mine seems to be a condition called IEM that was brought on by a virus that injured my vagus nerve. I guess i am just one of those unlucky ones that cant be cured. sad
I asked some doctors, they all said impaired peristalsis is irreversible. And peristalsis is primary reflux clearance, probably more important than sphincters. I have been living with this hell for six years.
Do u have any recomendations? :/

I had a Nissen fundoplication wrap seven months ago. I have had some issues with nausea ever since the surgery. I have found that Zofran does help with reducing my nausea. I am able to eat soft things like hot dish, jello smoothies, and have to watch the acid that is in the food I eat. i have had pain in my chest at time and the back of my right chest. not all the time but a few times a day. There is a pressure in my chest and back when i stand up. i did see my surgeon and tomorrow I have stomach scope.
can you have continuing gerd even with a nissen wrap?
