GERD and LPR symptoms started a few days after I had my wisdom tooth extracted last January. Took Amoxicillin 500 3x/day for 5 days. I began to notice excess saliva and difficulty swallowing after the antibiotic course. A few weeks later it progressed to severe heartburn every day. On the second month I developed a sore throat on 1 side and asthma symptoms.

It has been 5 months now and still have all symptoms including excess saliva. I’ve changed my diet and tried all the recommended supplements I’ve learned from here but nothing seems to help.

Took dexilant for a month. It got rid of the heartburn but non of the other symptoms so I stopped taking it. I’ve read that ppis may do more harm than good. I take zantac now if I can’t handle the pain.

This has affected my life so much in the past 5 months. My wife and 3 year old daughter, my job.

Please let me know if any of you were able to cure it.

Have you been formally diagnosed with GERD and/or LPR? If so, what testing did you have? Unfortunately, sometimes 30 days of a PPI isn't enough to rid you of the symptoms. Sometimes you can develop food sensitivities, I know you said that you changed your diet - but have you tried keeping a food diary to see if you can pinpoint any of your trigger foods? Another suggestion would be to stop researching your symptoms/self diagnosing through the internet as there is a lot of misinformation out there. Sometimes it's frustrating not to get immediate results, but there is no magical "cure."

Yes it was my PCP who diagnosed me with GERD. A month after LPR symptoms manifested, I was having chronic heartburn that never went away no matter how much I changed my diet. The only test that my doctor requested was an endoscopy which came out normal. He basically shrugged it off and told me that I may have to be on ppis for the rest of my life.

I've been eating small amounts of food 5 times a day for the past 2 months. All I eat is 1/2 cup of jasmine rice and unseasoned baked fish. I've stopped drinking coffee and alcohol as well. I don't eat 4 hours before bedtime, bought an anti-reflux pillow, and sleep on my left side but still haven't felt any improvement.

I'm just hoping that this will eventually pass.

You may want to make an appointment with a gastro doctor. He may suggest that you temporarily go back on Dexilant, or possibly try another PPI. The only one that gave me relief was Protonix, but everyone is different. There is also a prescription called Sulcrafate, that in liquid form has given a lot of board members relief.

Interestingly enough that's exactly when all these God-forsaken symptoms started for me. I was taking a painkiller and they had given me 800 milligrams of amoxicillin to take for precaution of infection. I usually don't even take antibiotics but I figured since I had gotten 5 different tooth extractions and with all these open holes in my mouth all at once to go take it along with my pain medications also mind you. It was like everything started changing right away. I was bloating really really quickly after every meal, like feeling sick. I was getting this cool sensation in my chest which started getting worse and worse until now it's literally the worst heartburn day in and day out and now LPR symptoms with it that pretty much is a constant raw burning in my throat from sun up until sundown. There is nothing I can physically do to make the throat burning go away....It just takes almost any joy out of a day. I can't even read a book without constant burning in my throat or stomach, sometimes it just hurts so much I have to stop everything I am doing just to grab at my throat for a minute. Also, I don't know how it is with you food wise, but I've changed diets countless amounts of time with yet still the same symptoms.

What's crazy is every test that I've had at the doctor comes back with everything is fine.... I've lost everything friends, family, my job, my motivation to live for life. And I really did stop going to doctors, after countless of tests, x-rays, tubes shoved every which way down my body....it really just gets too expensive and the doctors keep throwing PPI's at you which really seem to make matters worse (at least for myself anymore). I really do feel for you because I understand. It's been about a year since this nightmare all began. I want to believe that one day we get better, despite the fact there doesn't seem to be any solid evidence of that happening for anyone, just questions. Unfortunately, not to sound negative, but I guess it's just mind over matter with this illness, disease, or whatever the heck you want to call it. I am hoping it isn't permanent either, but anyway, I just wanted to if anything let you know, I understand the struggle with this

First of all, thank you so much for taking your time to respond. It is, for lack of a better term, comforting to know that I am not alone.

Like you, I was given strong painkillers together with the antibiotics (Tylenol 3). It never crossed my mind that something this horrible could result from taking those drugs that are routinely prescribed by dentists and health care practitioners all over the world. When the symptoms first appeared, I kept on coming back to my dentist thinking that she might have done something wrong, like damaging a nerve or god knows what. When I didn't get answers, I consulted another dentist, then another but non of them could give me answers and are basically clueless of what might have caused it. I then started to do my own research, mostly in forums and realized that in a lot of people, this condition was mostly triggered after a surgery or an upper respiratory infection that was followed by a strong antibiotic course. I realized, due to the timing of the symptoms, that this is what was happening to me.

To this date, I have seen 2 gastroenterologists, an ENT specialist, and an Internist and none of them could give me answers. Had all possible tests done and like yours, all came out normal. None of them believed that antibiotics could have caused this. I saw a functional medicine doctor who tried numerous herbal treatments that didn't make a slightest dent. I stopped drinking coffee and alcohol, tried 3 different diets and did each for a month to no avail. Took different brands of probiotics and all supplements that are supposed to help. Elevated my bed, didn't eat 4 hours before bed time, and ate small amounts 5 times a day. I've lost so much weight that my clothes don't fit anymore.

I can't believe that a routine dental extraction can create this kind of havoc in our lives. The worst part is not knowing when or if this disease would ever go away. I'd rather have a more serious but curable illness than to get drowned in uncertainty.

I agree with you that at this point, it's mind over matter. Let's not let this disease take what's left of our lives. I'll try my best to forget the perfect, healthy life I had in the past and learn how to live with this. Let's just hope that one day we wake up from this nightmare.

I promise to you that if I ever find a solution, I will let you know.

first of all sorry, english is not my native language,but i hope you can understand me. i am responding because i think i know what is going on in your cases. You can still argue with me later,no problems smile But i want you to read from here on at your own responsibility.
I wanna repeat that, because on one hand, i wanna save you time,money and frustrations i went through in seven years of this nightmare. On other hand, informations i have can be very depressing.

What happened in your cases is probably a post extraction peripheral neuropathy,maybe it could also be a vagal neuropathy. I was a member of many gerd and lpr support groups,and when symptoms arrived all out of blue, it was unfortunatelly after a wisdom tooth extractions or after a viral infection. sad

This incidents damaged nerves,responsible for esophageal contractions, which is many times a completely overlooked reflux defence mechanism( all attention is usually placed on sphincters and excess acid,which is not true).

The only thing you can do to diagnose that is esophageal manometry-in my case it showed severely damaged conctractions/motility so now i have a disease called ineffective esophageal motility. It means your esophagus is to weak to clear even normal reflux episodes( your reflux numbers,demester score will be just within healthy individual range),or to be more precise, refluxes stay in tube for 11 minutes(!) causing all king of inflammations,soreness,SOB,.. The normal time is 10-30 seconds and than a HEALTHY VAGUS nerve pushes stomach content back to where belongs-to stomach.

Please respond what you think about what i just wrote. I lost thousand of dollars for 'miracle cures', played a guessing game for so long and couldnt find any relief-because there seems to be none.
( there is no real pharmacological intervention current that would successfully restored the impaired smooth muscle contractions). My compassions, i know excactly how painful this is,how doctors are clue and careless, how science is completelly underdeveloped as regards that painful missfortune that hit us.

There are better promotility drugs on it's way, but when excactly? All current have very bad and serious side effects.

Still here and unfortunately, still unwell.

I've been on 4 different PPIs for the past few months (pantoprazole, esomeprazole, rabeprazole, and dexilant). They did help in getting rid of the heartburn but none of the other symptoms. Still having nasal congestion and regurgitation after meals, sore throat, and excess saliva that sometimes turn into thick, foamy mucus.

Still taking probiotics. I try a different brand every month. Still waiting for the results of the barium swallow test I just did and I'm scheduled for my 2nd endoscopy in November. The results of the first one came back normal.

Not ready to give up on this yet but I'm running out of ideas and the doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

I just wish that one day this would go away on its own. It has been almost 8 months with no significant relief.

Karl I've gone through the same things you've gone through. I eat only brown rice and fish and I've lost 40lbs so far in the last 4 months. My symptoms are the same as yours, but I also get bubbles of acid coming up to my throat as well as coughing, so I suspect that my UES valve is damaged, but this might not be the case for you.

I feel the same way with doctors, the one who put me on antibiotics did it without even thinking. And I'm poor living in the US so my insurance is bad and all I get is bad doctors.

Which PPI gave you the most relief and did you take double the dose?

Are you able to at least function normally at work now and consume your proper calories? And what food are you eating now a days?

You said you had asthma symptoms, so does that mean you had shortness of breath and a cough? And are they gone now?

I was feeling doom and gloom last night reading nemiren's posts, but who knows? With time the both of us will probably get better. Please do let me know how your barium swallow turns out, and sorry for all the questions.

Yes I do get bubbles in my throat as well especially after a meal and it does make me cough. I had an ECG and a lung spirometry done several weeks ago to rule out cardio and pulmo issues but the results came out normal. I'm still experiencing shortness of breath which is worse after meals and any sort of physical activity.

I tried a very restrictive diet for two months but it did not make even a slight difference. At that time I only ate steamed fish and jasmine rice, small portions 5x a day. No other drinks but water. Now I'm back to eating what ever I want and slowly regaining the 30lbs I lost. I might have given up on the diet too early but I really don't think it will do anything.

Double dose of Pantoprazole gave me the most relief. Not so much though, I'd say about 10% better. The others did nothing at all for me.

How long were you taking Amoxicillin before it all started? I was on a 5-day course of 500mg 3x a day. My symptoms started a day after the course was done.

Karl, I was taking 500mg of Amoxicillin x1 a day for 7 days, but I also took this along with the PPI omezparole. Symptoms began after I ate a big burrito a few days after finishing the antibiotics course.

I feel some hope now that you are regaining your weight and that the heartburn is under control. I am also glad to hear that there are no pulmonary issues.

Are you still on Pantoprazole or did you only take the double dose for a short time and then stop?

Hi Friends,

Same thing had happened to me in 2015. It will take sometime to heal. Sharon was right on taking smaller portion and take down notes on new food you are eating and see if this is not a trigger food for you. The simplest food but with a dash of pepper could also be a trigger. Too much water intake could do affect you too. I was eating half banana, coz if I ate more than that.. then I felt horrible. Only soft boiled organic egg, at least 7mins and I turn it off and let it set for 3 more mins. Because if I overcook, it triggers my stomach. Remember your stomach could not digest the food that quick due to damage gut flora due to the antibiotics. So Probiotic helps. I was drinking Yakult (blue color/less sugar) after every meal. (works for me).

You will get better. Don't lost hope. It will take time. My experiece was different as I totally wean myself from the PPI and other meds. It was a process but duable. You can click on my name and you will see my experience and how I healed. God bless you.

My symptoms got worse since taking PPI. I started off with wheezing and I assumed it was stomach acid since I had GERD for 8 years. However, I was even wheezing when I was sitting up, so maybe I could have obtained new allergies.

I took the PPI and antiobiotics and the wheeze turned into a chronic cough. I stopped taking the PPI for two weeks and got acid rebound to my throat. Then I went back on PPIs and developed symptoms of LPR.

After this I developed a burning sensation in my chest all day, every day for the last 4 months. The burning in the chest does not respond to antacids, including tums, or even Gaviscon.

So basically I had no issues with heartburn til after taking PPIs and antiobiotic.

I wonder if it is possible that the PPI lowered my stomach acid too low, and that is why I am experiencing these symptoms. I will take an endoscopy on oct 10th, and depending on what it shows, hopefully I'll begin to wean off PPIs and see if these issues resolve.

Did you have the feeling of bubbles going up your esophagus while on PPIs? I believe this might be because I have low stomach acid and the food is just sitting there.

PS I am a believer, and also feel that God does miracles. I hope I will regain my quality of life someday.

With my situation, the antibiotic had damaged the gut flora. All the while I thought I had too much stomach acid but it was the other way around. You were right, your stomach might not have enough acid to digest the food you were eating.

I read this site below and it had helped me understand the acidity and low acidity of my stomach. This might help you too. I went to ER and few expensive doctor's visit, but they just keep giving me PPI. Not even realizing my stomach don't have enough acid to digest even the little food I was eating. Taking PPI made it worst rather than getting better. Your situation might be different than mine but have your self check first.

I think Uros from Slovenia is on to something. Like you all, I had a #3 extraction 8 years ago, abx, then instant LPR symptoms. Wife, nobody, is very understanding about it. Can't sing. Can't talk for long periods without becoming hoarse. Excessive saliva. Mucus. Throat clearing. To dentists, endodontists, dental surgeons, gastros, you name it. All kinds of tests. Thousand of dollars. It's affected everything. But it's the new normal. And depressing. But I've tried everything, diets, probiotics, acv, ppis, other supplements, hci, etc...nothing. probiotics seems to help a little. Just wanted to offer that I understand the frustration, that I've been doing it for 8 years, and that nerve damage seems a reasonable theory.

I developed gerd suddenly after a virus 8 months ago. It’s been absolute hell trying to manage it and figure out the cause. I’ve lost 11 lbs since it started and have been suffering since I cannot take any meds (they all made me sick). Things that help me are drinking celery juice on an empty stomach each morning because it aids in the digestion of your food, taking digestive enzymes, and not eating anything with gluten. I also just stumbled upon this thread and also this link that I really believe is the cause of reflux, because when my heartburn started, it came with tingly/pins and needle sensations in my hands and legs as if I had a nerve issue. Hopefully this can lead to a cure in the future.

I'm wondering if any of you managed to find out what was happening or if your feeling better now???

I'm suffering with bad acid yet I'm struggling to pinpoint what my trigger was so doing some research and came across this so
I'll give a bit of background on it.

March 2020 I ended up with a really bad dental abcess thankfully just before we went into UK lockdown, I was due to have the tooth removed but lockdown came and it got cancelled
From March to October I ended up having treatment 5 times for the same abcess
Finally managed to get in to have the tooth removed the end of November, I've major fear of the dentist so have to be sedated for some reason the sedative didn't work as well as it usually does I can still remember the conversations I had and the procedure I just didn't freak out thank god

I've not been myself since Sept bit of chest pain hot flushes general malaise and aches and pains I've also lost a stone since Sept (drs kept saying it was possibly anxiety)
I've had blood tests first one came back low foliate but not enough to need medication
I've had an ecg 24 hour monitor
Chest xray and another blood test this time it came back with a slightly high inflammation marker, im now being reffered for an ultrasound and another blood test.
Since December I've had acid with only a 2 week break from it
I've been put on lansoprazole on day 2 of it now and I'm fed up of it already its ruining my life I can't function
But I'm wondering if it could be from taking so many antibiotics in a short space of time and having the tooth removed triggered it

Sometimes it is very difficult to pinpoint what causes acid reflux. I'm confused as to why lansoprazole is ruining your life after two days? Most PPIs don't offer much benefit for a few weeks. If lansoprazole doesn't work, there are other options to try. Anxiety or depression is a major factor, it can cause/make your symptoms seem worse. We are all in difficult times, and I know that you are frustrated, but if you were prescribed the PPIs you should take them. Unfortunately, symptoms won't disappear overnight and you have to be diligent with your treatment.

Hello Everyone,

I found this thread because I have been suffering for the last week after taking prescribed painkillers and antibiotics for my wisdom tooth extraction. I have never suffered from acid reflux but for the last week I have been woken up in the middle of the night with excruciating burning and stabbing in my chest. I went to the ER the first time it happened and they didn't seem concerned, said it was acid reflux. I've modified my diet, took tums, increased water intake, etc. but now I am experiencing pain when I start to eat a meal and right after. My stomach is also churning now which is new as of yesterday. Does this sound like anyone else's experience?

Backstory- I was on Amoxicillin for 7 days prior to extraction for a infection in my tooth, they switched me to Clindamycin 300mg for the last week so two weeks of antibiotics. I was also taking 600mg Ibuprofen and 500mg Tylenol every 6 hours for two weeks straight.

Hi,

I had the pain meds and antibiotic triggered the digestive sensitivities. I was on and off. Now doing the LOW FODMAP diet and it helped me. Most of all prayers.

I think, more than anything, that the amount of of Ibuprofen that you were taking has probably caused something called gastritis - which is an irritation of the stomach lining. Keep up what you are doing, and you might want to take an over-the-counter Pepcid at bedtime. Unfortunately, the irritation doesn't clear up overnight.
