1 Month Post Fundoplication Surgery

Today marks one month post Fundoplication surgery. I am only 19 years old so I am very young for having this surgery done. I had a full wrap and a hiatal hernia repair done. For the first week or so I was in a lot of pain from the surgery which was normal and I was on oxycodone. After that subsided I was okay for around 3-4 days but after that I was throwing up anywhere from 3 times a day to 7-8 times a day felt I had a upset stomach the whole time. I had to go back to the Hospital and stayed there for 4 days because I wasn’t intaking any fluids or keeping them down because of the vomiting. It lasted for around 2 weeks or so but I can finally say I’m done!! It has been 3 days since I’ve thrown up anything and I feel so much better I even had some white fish yesterday and it stayed down fine. Been eating better as well and liquid intake is better. Now really the only part that I find hard is not being able to eat whatever I want lol. But just for everyone that is struggling just know it does get better with time. Try and stay busy and let the time pass by. I hope everyone else is doing well and recovering. I would love to hear from you guys!

@Pixie415 . Hello Yes I am doing better just really hard not being able to eat whatever I want but I know it’s gonna take some time haha. Kevin Reavis did my surgery he’s one of the top surgeons in Portland, Oregon. I stopped throwing up about 4 days ago and I been eating some foods and everything is staying down I feel much better. How are you doing? When did you have your surgery?

Thank you. I have Zofran and promethazine on hand if I need them. Also yes I have found myself kind starting to advance too quickly on my diet so I’m going back a little bit for awhile just to make sure. How are you feeling overall tho 4 years post surgery? Was it a success?

It was a success. I can tell your that a complete recovery should not give you a license to overindulge and it's still possible to suffer from occasional heartburn, but not reflux as before. I don't drink alcohol anymore, but that was my own choice, and I still need to be careful eating steak. I think the biggest thing to remember is that you still need to really chew your food well. I still get occasional waves of nausea for no reason, but they are few and far between and a side effect that a lot of people seem to experience - even years later. I still follow-up with my surgeon and have had repeat endoscopies to make sure the wrap is still completely intact. I was very lucky that my surgeon took a lot of time with me to make sure I understood what my recovery would be like and that I would not be able to belch like before, or vomit. Those two issues never really bothered me. Oh, and I recently needed an umbilical hernia repair in August, done by the same surgeon.

I'm glad your pulling through matt. you can always message me or any others if you need any support. however man I might have gotten really lucky, because so far these past 3 months I only had very minor symptoms, that I'm just trying to manage by diet, lifestyle and medication. that way it doesn't progress and get worse. I'm seeing a Gi doc next week, so he can fill me in on what other information their is.
