Couldn't tolerate the manometry test

Please, does anyone have any advise/experience of not being able to complete the crucial manometry test ?
I was not particularly worried about the test (thought it couldn't be any worse than endoscopy, which I managed), however once the tube was inserted past the nose (this bit was actually fine) and into the eosophageas I was told to sip water through a straw - the problem seemed to be that I couldn't swallow properly with the tube in my throat and the water seemed to back-up such that my airway closed off and I couldn't breathe. I ripped the tube out and was releived that I could now breathe. The Dr tried again after a rest and I tried to drink less water and just swallow when told - the tube had almost reached the correct position and I took a sip of water and the same problem happened again - I ripped the tube out and was able to breathe again. The Dr then abandoned the test.
I am so disappointed because I now feel that my consultant will never be able to give a proper diagnosis (and therefore treatment), my acid has returned with vengeance coming right up my nose. Ingesting anything makes the acid rush up my throat. I also had a bile attack 3 nights ago (really disgusting)
I had to visit ER 2 days ago with breathing difficulties and was told that my airway was red and suppurating, I now have swallowing issues and am scarred stiff of not being able to breathe after drinking or eating.

Please can anyone offer advise / similar stories

ps. I am a very fit 54 yr male

Thanks Sharon, I didn't feel particularly anxious so it was a nasty surprise not being able to breathe. I am extremely anxious now ! If I'm offered another test any more comments on how to get through it would really help.

That test was awful, I started to have a panic attack at the beginning and messed up my first swallow, he told me I would have to be there until it was complete so I knew the longer I couldn't do it the longer I'd stay.

I started to breathe and focus on only that. I calmed down and he said I had done it faster than anyone he'd ever seen.

I thought this was the hardest test I've ever done. I plan to never have it done again. I just tried to stay calm and breathe the best that I could. My entire body was trembling. I do believe it is all will power. I did learn there are places that do this while sedated or partially sedated. I'm unsure where. I went right from that to an endoscopy and the surgeons told me they were trying to get it approved at their hospital.

Definitely an awful test.

When he was inserting the tube in my nose, I gagged and heaved. Once it was placed in the correct spot, I couldn't stop swallowing for several minutes, so much so that I didn't think I was going to be able to complete the test. It seemed like it took forever trying to get through it. I was finally able to focus, I opened my mouth wide in between swallows to help prevent swallowing when I wasn't supposed to.

It felt like my thought was raw afterwards but it didn't last long.

Since the manometry measures swallowing function, taking a valium sounds good - but in reality, you probably can't take any type of relaxant to get an accurate result. Ask your Doctor.
