10 days post surgery shoulder pain!

It’s 10 days since my surgery on January 18th and I’m very much on the liquid and runny purée diet and sometimes forget and eat a bit much or too fast and I feel it ....... I guess I’m at the swelling stage so hopefully it won’t be long until I can hit the mashed Veges and gravy!

My biggest problem is still the shoulder pain which I gather is referred from a cranky diaphragm after being stitched during hernia repair. Has anyone else had this problem? It hurts when taking a deep breath and lying down causes some pain in both shoulders at night! I’m just concerned it’s a permanent issue and it’s so painful! I thought it could be gas but it has lasted too long 🙁

It still may be from trapped gas. The best remedy for trapped gas is to walk, as much and as often as possible.

Hi Rosie,
I found the shoulder pain to be the WORST pain of the surgery, and pain meds didn’t touch it. 😳I thought it a strange pain to come from stomach surgery, but it’s absolutely a common side-effect.

Sharon is absolutely right. Walk, walk, walk! I found the more I walked, the better my shoulder felt. Hang in there. At some point you’ll notice it has improved...patience! And WALK!😉

I felt the exact same way as you do. Shoulder pain was in both shoulders and pain across the front right below my neck. It hurt awful to take a deep breath. I was so worried too but it was all normal and part of it. It didn't go away until about 2 1/2 weeks and then it was gradual. I didn't take any pain meds after I was home so it may have been a bit worse for me. I don't like taking those. I hate the way they make me feel so it was just Tylenol for me.

I am a month out from surgery now and believe me, things will get ALOT better. Be patient and give yourself time to heal and it will all be good. It's hard with all the new symptoms you think something else is wrong.

Hanging there and what your feeling is totally normal. smile

Thank you so much everyone it really is a relief to here of everyone’s experience with this. The doctors and nurses all say the pain should go in a few days but I’ve got news for them!
I need to walk more but I find I am in pain when I take a deep breath so don’t like exerting myself 😬. Also here in Australia we’ve got 35*C + daily so walking is limited to early morning and night. I’m going to make a big effort over the next few days!! ( I need a treadmill 😊)
I’ve also been given some indocid anti inflammatory suppositories and they help a lot! Not the nicest method of medicating but avoids the wrap and the doc said it’s the best way. I’m still on a somac a day going to alternate days next week. No heartburn since the wrap!!!

Just walking around inside your house will help. I had a treadmill and started at 2.0 mph and that’s all it took. No need to push yourself in the beginning!😉

The shoulder pain is normal it's just the gas they pumped into your stomach when they did the surgery and it usually goes into the neck and shoulders after the surgery I had it for the first month after my surgery seven months ago and exercising got rid of most of the pain for me and then two months after the surgery I went back to my chiropractor and had my neck and shoulders worked on and that got rid of all the pain so that could also be and option for you down the road. Get well soon.

Hope recovery is going well Rosie. I am having my Op tomorrow so will post my recovery blog in the next few days .. My indigestion has got worse over the last couple of weeks so am really looking forward to the outcome of not having it after although it will seem weird as living with it for so long you get used to having it but I certainly won’t miss it ! Laters.

I’m so glad you are getting this done you will be so happy! I’m going really well at almost 3 weeks the shoulder pain has eased although I’m only just off anti inflammatories but they made a huge difference. My swallowing is good and I’ve moved on from purées to mashed veges and some Rossoni pasta this evening (eating about a cup at one time). I’m still very careful and going slowly as I want healing to be optimal! Baby food purées with my own veges are good for protein, I certainly add salt!
I might add I have only a vague feeling of discomfort but no heartburn! I’m on one somac a day and next week go to alternate days.
