Had endoscopy five years ago, do I need Barium now?

Hi all,
My reflux/digestive issues started five years ago, and I had an endoscopy to rule things out (all clear).

I'm working with a new doc now, as my reflux (LPR) and slow digestion is really bad again (though it's been on and off for past five years), and one of the tests he recommends (among the others I'll do--EGD, gastric emptying, Restech) is the Barium, in place of another endoscopy.

I feel it's unnecessary, since I had an endoscopy, and have had the same reflux issues for a long time. Or can new things show up within a few years? I don't know. I guess I just don't want to do it, since it sounds gross!!!

Yes you need to have the barium swallow, in addition to a repeat endoscopy. The EGD that you mentioned is an upper endoscopy procedure. There is no way I would rely on a procedure that was done 5 years ago, issues can arise very quickly.

Actually the EGD is not an endoscopy--it's a swallowing/motility test. I know that is required.

I don't believe a Barium PLUS endoscopy is needed--they are both intended to show same thing. But I should probably get one of them done again....

An upper endoscopy is routine procedure to examine the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract. Also known as esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD), it examines the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning part of your small intestines (duodenum).

If you feel that you don't need both procedures, then don't have the barium swallow. Again we aren't medical professionals on this Forum, but we are here to offer advice based on our own experiences.

Sorry, Sharon, you're right--EGD is the endoscopy. For some reason, someone told me EGD was abbreviation for the esophageal motility test...and now I know that's not correct. Ugh. Too many tests!

So, I know I have to have the esophageal motility test, because I haven't before.

Are you saying that the EGD is more valuable than the Barium swallow? I was told I could have either one, as it's been five years since last EGD and, as you say, issues can arise quickly. Seems they look at similar things? Or do you think EGD is better, or more comprehensive? Thanks again...

I would definitely have both. The barium swallow wouldn't necessarily see things like Barrett's esophagus or gastritis, like the EGD would see with the camera. I also had the 24 hour BRAVO pH monitoring for acid reflux and the Manometry that checks for swallowing dysfunction. If you are having doubts about what testing you need, definitely get a second opinion.
