Had the scope yesterday for severe heartburn & reflux. Diagnosis was corrosive esophagitis. Path reports to follow. But what surprised me is that the surgeon prescribed Pepcid! I guess I am so used to all the new meds for this & the thought of using one of the old ones like Pepcid or AlkaSeltzer came as a shock.

Has anyone else used Pepcid for CE? AND did you significantly change your diet?

Hi Pam,
I was diagnosed with esophagitis in September and have been on a PPI since July. I think usually they do prescribe the PPI for CE (since healing rates tend to be better), but perhaps your doc is conservative and wants to see if your situation can resolve with the H2 blocker first? I have been using the medicine and eating a bland/low acid diet, which has helped, but it's been slow going. I'm just now starting to feel better. Dr. Johnathan Aviv's book, The Acid Watcher's Diet, is helpful.
What are your symptoms?

Hi CG,

Basically my problem is severe heartburn & cough. Since I already have asthma-caused COPD, the issue gets complicated but the cough has gotten worse as the heartburn has worsened. Leading up to the endoscopy, I have suspected that my daily glass of red wine (or glass & a half!) has had a hand in this & sincelstg week I have abstained & the heartburn is MUCH better! No TUMS in over 24 hours whereas before, they had been a daily mainstay!

I will be back in touch with my doctor tomorrow, I think, & will await the path reports from the procedure. I suspect that the surgeon took tissue samples since there are path reports!

I just hope this resolves well. I already have glaucoma, a extremely overactive bladder, on top of COPD so I don't need something lethal in my throat!

I am getting sick of this bland diet I have put myself on. Last 2 nites, pea soup with ham & veggies, cheese, bread with garlic humus, & yogurt for dessert. But I do crumble cookies into the yogurt . But I miss my glass of red wine!

Off to take my Pepcid.

Hi Pam, glad to read you are seeing some improvement. An excellent medical website is the MayoClinic.com. You can type in your dx & brings up the info. Pepcid is one of the meds stated there. They also have a good list of foods & things to avoid while dealing with this.

I hope you continue to improve.
