Contemplating Surgery/Chronic Cough

Hi, everyone! I just joined and am considering getting surgery for hiatal hernia (small) and acid reflux. I have an appointment with a surgeon in Florida, Dr. Sharona Ross. My main complaint, along with the stuffed sinuses, heartburn, hoarseness and feeling like something stuck in my throat, is a chronic cough. If I talk for long I usually start coughing. I am a minister and am afraid to get up and do a talk because I usually start coughing. Luckily, my husband, who is also a minister, is able to do most of the Sunday talks.

The questions I have are if coughing was a symptom you had and after the surgery did it stop? Also, what kind of surgery did you have and do you regret it? And can I drink coffee after the surgery? (I know that may sound strange, but I like my coffee in the morning.)

I would highly recommend surgery!
I have had reflux and chronic cough for over 30 years which had stopped responding to any medication and was really debilitating. I had Nissens with a hiatus repair in September and have not needed to take any meds since. The reflux has stopped and I have not coughed at all. I can’t describe the difference it has made to my life.
There are some foods that get stuck if I eat too quickly (totally my fault!). I still have coffee and tea and they do not cause me any problems.

You would need to contact your insurance carrier. Some people have high deductibles and/or coinsurance and need to pay quite a bit out of pocket. I think my insurance billed out between $45-50,000 and it included one night's stay in the hospital. I have very good insurance and paid nothing out of pocket, but that's rare.
