I am new here. I have suffered with worsening chronic hiccups and achalasia for over 7 years. A little over a year ago, I had a Dor Fundoplication with a Heller Myotomy. I didn't know about the different types of Fundoplications and am reading that the Dor may not be ideal for achalasia patients. While food passes through the esophagus better, I feel the forceful gagging has undone the fundoplication. An expert esophagus Dr. at Wake Forrest did an EGD and he doesn't see this being done and I am now on multiple PPI’s to heal severe esophagitis. I have two Doctors with different views of my situation. In speaking to the Bariatric Dr. who did the procedure, he maintains that it normally can not be undone and if so, it is rare. I think we are dealing with ”rare” in my case. We have the operative report showing it was done. I questioned his choice of a Nissen over a Dor and he maintains he did the correct one. I also have a hernia at the LES and it was not treated since it was counterproductive to his opening up the esophagus.
Has anyone had this issue? Does anyone have trouble with saliva accumulating in the back of the throat necessitating a need to gag oneself in order to clear your throat? The acid has caused me to lose some teeth. I am negative for Barretts Esophagus thank heavens. Has anyone had a Dor fail and then have a Nissen?
I have tried Mucinex to thin my saliva and it helped very little. I feel like I am choking on my own saliva in addition to portions of whatever I eat or drink (protein shake) comes along with it. I have some days where I only have liquid shakes and it is the same issue.
Sleep and my quality of life is awful but I remain hopeful that you have a Dr. or treatment suggestion. I live in Greenville, SC.
Thank you!
