Can anxiety medication cause more acid reflux though.

I have been taking an anxiety medication for awhile. It seems like I am getting more acid reflux from it. Does anyone know if anxiety medication can cause more acid reflux. Any advice would be nice. Thanks.

Hi Asiangal555,

With my experience, anxiety meds was one of the trigger for GERD. I think it relaxes me but not my gut area. I have to stop my anxiety meds for that reason. But please check with your doctor before doing anything. I am just sharing my personal experience.

Also take a journal on food intake as there's some food that might cause the trigger too. Starch and Gluten seems to be one my trigger foods and then some. I love rice but have to limit my intake. I substituted it with Cauliflower rice. Not the best replacement but it helped a bit on the heartburns and discomfort. This is funny but true, I have to deal with my starch and rice separation anxiety.

Avocado and micro greens seems to help me too. All the best.

Thanks for your advice. Ya I think I need to talk to the person I see if the anxiety medication I am taking is causing some acid reflux though. Can I ask if you are taking any medication for the gerd condition. Thanks.

Hi Asiangal555,

For right now I do not take anything for GERD. I use to take PPI then tapered to Zantac then to Tums. I wean myself from it since 2017. I was ok for years. But due to eating too much triggered foods and sweets I sometime relapse. I go back to my diet (no starch or rice) Gluten free and avoid the trigger foods. I did some test and acid in my stomach was low. So I lemon squeeze helps. I eat small portion and list down new food I eat each time.

If your anti-anxiety medication is a benzodiazepine, it very well may be enhancing your GERD symptoms. Benzodiazepine's decrease the Lower Esophageal Sphincter pressure which may increase your reflux episodes.

I think it will be hard for me to not take any medication for the gerd condition. I think it takes awhile to get off ppi ya. I think I will be less sad when I don't have the gerd condition anymore. Thanks.

Good morning. I suffer with GERD/EoE and OCD/Anxiety. Lucky me. lol I have been on and off various SSRIs and benzodiazepines for years. Problem for me is that they cause a bunch of side effects. A few months back, I tried the EMSAM patch which is an MAOI. Well, after a week or so, this resulted in me having major swallowing problems. Although my psychiatrist did not see the connection, I believe the MAOI was slowing down my esophageal motility. A pharmacist I know said immediately that the drug could indeed slow things down. Needless to say, I stopped the EMSAM patch.

Hi Guitar Gerd,

God hearing from you.
With me medications is tough when you have GERD and stomach sensitivities. My food sensitivities gone bad that I have to stop any capsule meds including my vitamins. I have to switch to veggie caps and chewable. The size of the capsules even had bothered me. Last year I developed High BP due to being anxious. I was prescribed with Atenolol for Blood pressure and that triggered and bad heartburns and palpitations. Just sharing my experience.
