I had epigastric pain, and occasional heartburn. At first I did not have issues with reflux regurgitation at night. I was scoped and found to have mild esophagitis. I was on PPI’s for two years with no issues. Suddenly, everything came back. I went to a double dose of PPI’s with no relief. I also tried all different types of PPI’s with no relief. I was scoped again, showed no gastritis or esophagitis. My barium swallow showed mild reflux, my Bravo PH resulted in positive acid reflux exposure with still no esophagitis inflammation. So basically the PPis healed my esophagitis, but I was having heartburn and epigastric pain due to the reflux and no response to PPI’s, so I opted for a “floppy” Fundoplication. I am 4 weeks out and dealing with what feels like heartburn. The barium swallow shows a good wrap and no reflux. I may have a hypersensitive esophagus or functional heartburn. It’s been frustrating. I will give you this advice after my journey….
First get an endoscopy done. If you have esophagitis, try the PPI’s for a couple months, or whatever the Gi doc recommends. Try a round of food and drink eliminations, no coffee, no alcohol, chocolate, citrus, spicy food, tomato based food, blah blah blah. Get regular exercise and stressor relief. After that round, if things are still not working, ask for the next tests….barium swallow, gastric empty test, Hida-scan(gallbladder), Manometry, and finally a PH Bravo acid test. It is basically the “million dollar” work up, but it will cover everything.
My Prayers are with you.
