Throat closing sensation, is is GERD?

I am new here( Usually on the lupus forum). I have a sensation that someone has their hands around my throat. I have no problem swallowing while eating. Sometimes my mouth is very dry too. Is this a symptom of Gerd? I was also diagnosed recently with a Lupus-like syndrome. Not sure if it's coming from that, although I haven't seen anything about that on the lupus forum. I don't usually have any major reflux or burning. Just occasional Belching!
Any input will be appreciated.

I have GERD diagnosed by a GI doctor. I have the sensation that there is a lump in my throat. I am a woman, but the doctor told me that men sometimes describe the sensation as a tight tie around their necks. So what you describe could be GERD, but you should talk to a doctor. Swallowing is not a problem for me and should not be part of a GERD problem as far as I know.

Something to think about before you go to the doctor: Do you get heartburn when you bend over or when you lie down?

I don't remember dry mouth as being a related symptom.

Are you by chance a female between the ages of 40-56? I'm starting to think that this sensation (called "globus"), is very common during "the change". I had it alot during that time. I don't know if it's a relaxation of some of the throat muscles, because of the decrease in hormones.....but it's not a very pleasant sensation!
If you do have reflux, it could be irritating your throat for sure.

P.S. I would take some supplemental magnesium. It seems to help with muscles.

thanks for the replies. Yes, it does feel like someone has a tie around my neck and, yes I am 44 years old! I was wondering if it is actually a tightening of the neck muscles from stress. As don't feel reflux when I bend over, but I do have a burning irritated feeling in my windpipe. Well, I am seeing my rheumatologist today and I will ask him if anyone else has complained about this sensation.

Supposedly, when people have reflux, the acid can come up their esophogus at night, and cause all sorts of problems.....like wheezing, coughing, sore throats, etc. Have you noticed recently that it's hard to swallow some drier foods, like chicken? I noticed that when I would have that sensation, I also had more trouble swallowing, and also more snoring at night. That's why I was thinking it might have something to do with the effects our hormones have on our muscles.
One thing you can try to do is elevate the head of your bed, either by using 6" blocks under the head of the whole bed, or by getting a pillow wedge, that can raise your chest and head, without crunching you up in the middle. And definitely, never lie down for several hours after eating or drinking. Good luck!

I hope you can help me.  I am 46 years ols.  about 1 1/2 years ago I had a funny sensation in my throat.  A sensation like it was quickly closing, or fluttering, or swelling.  The sensation lasted for a few seconds and then was gone.  I then felt as through I could not breath, and cough.  I was send for an upper Gi and it was determined I had mild reflux.  1st I was placed on Acephex, became alergic to it then place on Protonix, and remain on it to this day.  A few months ago I started to get these symptoms again. I am under stress, my father is dying of cancer.  

Now I  am on toprol for High BP and the DR sent  me for a scope, which was normal. Daily I am experiencing this Throat closing problem.   When I get it I also begin to cough and my heart also flutters.  I am just beside myself.

I am wonder if these are much like your symptoms.  Did anything work for you?

Also, I think I have been misdignosed for a year, and am on meds I do not need.

Help !!! please anyone

i have gerd and the throat closing sensations also.i cant eat past 4-5 pm and then it is a light meal. i have to lose weight also. i am in a flare w/ my bowels also and taking flagyl, if you knock out oo much of the aicd in your stomach then you are opening up problems for bacteria for the GI so i try not to take any ant-acids unless it is absolutely necessary

 

i have had problems where i used to eat to late at night and then go to sleep and then 2 hours wake up chokeing and aspiration into my nose, ears, and my lungs very dangerous so now i dont eat any spicy foods chocloate caffine or onions garlic tomateos etc. i have to keep a very bland diet. first thing to do is to lose weight

I'm 65 years young and have been experiencing my throat closing. When it happens I can't breathe or swollow. I am having a repeat right now of what I experienced last August. I notice right before I have too much mucus
in my throat and on my tongue. I went to an ENT and he put a probe down my nose and said it was a result of
GERD. I know I do have GERD as I get burning in my chest often. The doctor told me to take one Prevacid i the morning before I have breakfast and another before dinner. Stay away from caffeine, cigaretts and spicy foods.
It has gotten better but not gone. I also started Claritan D and Mucinex. He said I am taking a shot gun approach but what the hell. I want to breathe!

I hope the doctor knows what he's talking about. I pray it never comes back for all of us.

I am new here, and I am concerned about my throat closing, too.  I have IBS, which I am managing fairly well, and I have GERD.  My GERD is well-controlled with OTC Prilosec.  I quit smoking nearly two years ago.  My problem is that it seems that my soft palate "collapses."  I do not have sleep apnea, according to a doctor who examined me.  The throat closing is not limited to sleeping hours.  In fact, I am experiencing a "spell" right now.  I'm also snoring more.  I am a 50 year old femal, perimenopausal, and I have gained lots of weight since quitting smoking.  I follow a good diet & exercise, but I cannot budge a pound--especailly the belly fat that appeared when I stopped smoking.  Any feedback will be appreciated.

I'd love to know how to lose weight too although I'm male 6'1 and 230lbs it won't budge up or down I've never been over 200 but because of the heart meds nothing is working and 30lbs on a belly really defines what a trucker type belly is . half my meds are for GERD

I've never had a weight problem, either, and I know that no one believes me when I tell them I do at least 30 minutes of cardio 6 days/week. I'm not as consistent with resistance training, which might be key. The past couple of years I have had some elevated fasting blood sugar levels (115, 108) which might indicate prediabetes. I have a family history. I follow something similar to the South Beach diet, which is also pretty good for IBS. Basically, high fiber, lean protein, very limited simple carbs. I'm 5' 7" and right around 200 pounds--most of that in my 40" waist. I'm really quite embarassed about it, don't like to be seen, and HATE shopping for clothes. I just don't know what has happened.

I'm coming back here because something is telling me this throat closing thing has nothing to do with GERD but rather GERD is possible prewarning of Heart Disease .You see what happened to me was step one , acid reflux for roughly 3 years before a heartattack but that heart attack is difficult to pinpoint as to the real cause because it could have been a failure due to having emphysema from smoking left undiagnosed with alot of testing until a full year after the heart attack... finally I can breath a little better for now havn't smoked since ...I never had a closing throat from GERD ever and the classic sign of heart problems is burning rather than an acidy feeling in the throat and the trachia and throat start clinching tight with alot of dryness in the throat . Gerd will eventually create heart problems and there is only one way to rid of it and that is the right foods and diet 24/7 your pancreas , liver , kidneys etc have to function properly or it leads to GERD which is the biggest sign of much worse things to come .If I don't eat right I pay and is it easy? no , but I do it right 95% of the time now

I never knew that GERD was a precursor to heart disease.  I did know that it could lead to stomach and/or esophageal cancer.  I had what was probably food poisoning in December 2004, and I discovered that I was positive for H. Pylori, the bacteria that causes ulcers & sometimes cancer.  I have struggled with GERD and IBS ever since, though I am finding management of my diet helps a lot.  I also take a probiotic.  My blood pressure runs a little low, and cholesteral has always been good.  However, at my most recent physical my LDL was slightly elevated.  I knew the belly fat was an indicator of heart disease, but why can't I shed it?!  I wonder if the swallow prolems have more to do with an ear-nose-throat problem.  Both parent had surgeries for deviated septums, I have lots of allergies, and I have a hoarse voice.

Whatever happened with your GERD and difficulty swallowing situation. I happen to be in the same boat now. Let me know how you resolved it. I am eager to know.

Out of no where I started to randomly cough. Then one day my throat completly closed, three days in a row. I'm scared to death that it's going to come back. It's been 3 weeks since my last episode. I"m went to 5 doctors, along with having my throat scoped. Now I'm on a diet, and scared of food. I'm a 32 male and I never had heart burn.
