I have a nasty hiatal hernia and I can tell you that any drugs a Gastro doctor will prescribe will give you a bit of temporary relief until the side effects of the drugs start making you sicker than the hernia. Nexium-24 hour made my GI tract bleed to the point I required two blood transfusions. Then I tried Pepid AC and got panic attacks. Gaviscon liquid caused me to pass out in a restaurant without any warning. Two other PPIs as well as extra strength Tums caused severe dizziness and headaches. For the most part, Gastro specialists are worthless. They give you an endoscopy and then prescribe medicine that will make you sick and just hide the root problem for a short while. Then the nasty side effects of the drugs set in. I have concluded that the only approach that works long term is a radical change in eating habits and diet so I recently launched on such a program. I already notice improvement. You can start by eating very small meals four or five times a day. Eat slowly, take small bites and chew, chew, chew! Refrain from eating three hours before going to bed. Elevate the head of the bed if possible and sleep on your left side. Only eat healthy foods that are hiatal and ulcer friendly with absolutely no cheating. If you have a slice of pizza or some chocolate, you will pay big time and the agony is not worth it. Quit alcohol and sodas. When you get up in the morning, take a good probiotic, then eat an organic red apple which really helps absorb the stomach acid. You can find all the foods you should and shouldn't eat on the Internet. I played the drug game for awhile and failed miserably because I would occasionally eat bad foods like pizza, dark chocolate and spare ribs, then take a couple of extra strength Tums to relieve the resultant torture. I failed miserably. Now I am on a new and PERMANENT path and I am optimistic that I will get long term relief from this terrible affliction! Good luck.
