Does anyone get pain in there stomach?

Ive been having a Gerd Flareup anyone get pains in there stomach above there navel sharp pain stays for ahwile.My ppi has been Zegerid 40 mg for a few months,and ive been taking mylanta??Anyone help me i scared??

I get a burning, gnawing sensation in my stomach sometimes and I feel nauseous most of the time since starting back on the Protonix.

seems like the pain gets better when i take mylanta..than my stomach aches real bad after i take mylanta like i said i take a ppi also,but the dr said on flareups use mylanta..i wonder if this cause the stomach pain??

Im just trying to figure what to do for my flareup,mylanta making my stomach hurt,never had that happen before..So What should i do now,im allergic to asprin so no mallox plus,or pepto..the zegerid just isnt helping on this flareup,i need something to get me by??any ideas??

If you have been positively identified by an internist as having reflux disorder you should stick to taking your PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) as directed. You should make sure you take it with a glass of water (not milk as some do) and avoid caffeine. If you have had a scope done in two years, you should probably make an appointment to see your internist and have another to make sure there is no esophogeal errosion. You should also dicuss with your internist the possibility of switching to a medication similar to Nexium (" Esomeprazole") or Prilosec ("Omeprazole") these two drugs seem to work the best for most people, and they do wonders for me. I would ask first about Omeparzole because it is cheaper generally and is over-the-counter as compared to Nexium which can run as high as $150.00 (USD) for a full prescription (one month).

I had the scope done a year and half ago it came back clean,I  take Zegerid 40 mg..Its a strong ppi..

Hey Outlaw, I don't know what to tell you about your stomach. ? I just decided to stop my ppi this weekend because I think it is making me sick. I'll try to go back on in a couple of days-maybe. I'm seeing my doctor on Monday and am going to talk to her about it. I've just had much more pain and nausea since going back on protonix and I'm tired of it right now but I don't know what to do. I am suppose to take the meds to clear up a very minor case of esophogitis and gastritis but I have more pain since the meds. WHY???????

Oh forgot to say that I also started taking that Dan ACTIVE immunity drink the last couple of days and I think it makes my stomach feel better. It is a probiotic cultured dairy drink that is suppose to add good flora or bacteria to your digestive system. I don't know. I'll have to just wait and see.....

The PPI is to reduce the reflux so that any harm caused by the refluxing of acid can heal. Prematurely stopping may be counter-productive.

Thank you David, but you know nothing about my history! I have been seen by a cardiologist for over 5+ years for chest pain and various arrhythmias. My cardiologist sent me to the GI who performed an endoscopy to see if that could explain the Chest Pains which I experience EVERYDAY!!! I do have coronary artery spasms and am on medication. The cardiologist knows that explains SOME of my problems but not all. He is a very compassionate, caring, and thorough man. The GI found very minor issues with me that does not explain my DAILY pain and wrote my cardiologist to explain this. In the meantime, she put me on the ppi to try to clear up the MINOR issues she found because that is what they do. NOW this has caused me MORE PAIN in OTHER AREAS. I have talked with her office about this a couple of times and I have an appointment with my primary care on Monday to try to sort through some of it. I am also being sent for an abdominal unltrasound and a HIDA scan as well as being sent to a rheumatoligist to explore other explanations for my pain such as fibromyalgia which my primary care physician thinks I have and I am inclined to agree. Unfortunately the rheumatologist can't see me until July, but what is another 2 1/2 months after 5+year. I am not telling Outlaw or anyone else to stop taking their ppi. I said that I have made that decision for ME because of all the issues I am dealing with these days. The minor GI issues being the least of my worries at this point in time!

I am just making sure that Outlaw is aware that stopping a PPI can be counter-productive. I'm just speaking from personal experience as someone who stopped taking a PPI and had his symptoms get ten times worse because of it :)

Hi Outlaw,

I have had those type pains. I had been taking prevacid for over 2 years when I had sharp pains above the navel, sometimes to the right side, and in the chest (pain description fit that of a heart attack-which it wasn't).  My Endo said this type of pain is typically caused by 3 things: 1) Gastritis, 2) ulcer, or 3) hiatal hernia with Gerd.  An upper endo and other tests can determine this.

In my case, I wound up in the hospital with severe stomach pain (above the navel) and chest pain.  $26,000 in tests later and the result was gastritis and hiatal hernia with GERD.  In my case the gastritis was not caused by cancer, H Pylori or other infections.  My endo explained that in a number of cases where the cause isn't clear the problem may be stress related and that the more stressed (even if you aren't aware of any stress) a person is the more the symptoms present.

He explained that over time ppi's become less effective and you may need to change meds.  I am now on Priolsec (prescription strength 40mg) which I will have to purchase OTC in 2 months because my insurance will not cover more than 60 days out of 150.  Doctor says I will have to take it for a long time.  He says that surgery should be viewed as a last option since it can actually cause more problems.

He also said that light exercise, stay away from carbonated beverages, caffeine and chocolate will help.

Hope this brings you help and ease the scare.  By all means, continue your meds, get re-tested.  Try to relax, raise the head of your bed (not by pillows but by raising the legs), sleep on your left side (Endo said that seems to help keep the acid down and may lessen the pain), do not over breathe as hyperventilating can cause gas-like pains.

Were you having this pain before or after starting the PPI's?

I was put on prilosec over 5 years ago for GERD.  Several months later my stomach started burning.  Had all the tests done-everything was fine.  GI dr insisted it was not the PPI's and that I needed to continue.

Im still on prilosec but I am now slowly coming off of it.  My last scope showed gastritis in my stomach. 

All I know is that I had no stomach pain till I started taking  PPI's in the first place!!  One thing that helps me out a lot is DGL licorice root.  It helps sooth the pain in my stomach.  It might be worth a try?  Hope things improve.

just a note to becareful about licorace, it will raise blood pressure.

What is the difference between an internist and Gastrology doc doing the indoscope? 

I tried prontix, prilosec and nexium and can't take any of them.  I am soon going to resort to herbs.  Slippery elm over time will heal the colon and digestive tract.  And yes along with probiotics.  But it takes so long for those things to work and the if there is danger in using meds and that stuff together.

HopesYou talked about a drink?   Could you tell a little bit more about it.  It may help the others.  I know being on antibiotics for years I am sure this is why i have so much trouble.  I also have a hiatial hernia.

Deb, It is called Dan Active with L. Casei Defensis Immunity. It is a probiotic cultured drink in the dairy/yogurt section of my grocery store. It is a really small bottle that you can drink in the mornings. Don't know if it is helping but it certainly isn't making me nauseous. Besides L. Casei Defensis cultures, it also contains cultures of L. Bulgaricus and S. Thermophilus.

I will look it up on the internet or call some of the health food stores around here.  Our grocery stores do not carry that, I am sure of it.  I only see that new Activa yogurt and I have been eating yogurt to try to put some things back in. 

I also read up on Primal defense.  It helped a man who had crohns. 

All I know is I hurt from the throat down into my pevlis and sometimes lower.

I did have a blood test for my thyroid and will hear about that this week.    My last hope literally, is the gastro appt. tomorrow morning early. then an pelvic ultrasound.

The older mennonite lady who I work with takes something called essiac tea.  I did take it for awhile, but read that someone who had their gallbladder out should not take it. 

I also found out from this gastro doc I am seeing tomorrow. that I should not have had my gallbladder out. He said with a reading such as mine from the hyda scan, they don't take them out anymore.  normal is 35 and mine was 34 , just barely under.  He said they don't do it anymore .    I had no stones it just wasn't working quite normal.  I said why they did the surgeon take it out.  He left the choice up to me but why did he say it's not enough reason to take it out.  I didn't have the same gastro doc back then, it was another one in the practice. 

      Just really have almost no hope anymore.

I had an abdominal ultrasound and HIDA scan Friday. The tech who did the HIDA said that they don't take the gallbladder out at 34 because of insurance companies now. They refuse to pay. She said that they have patients with readings like that who the doctor has to send home to suffer another 6 months. Then they redo the scan and it will then usually show 36. Then the patient can get there gallbladder removed. So she made it seem that once it is not functioning properly it will only get worse, not better and it is only a matter of waiting until the numbers are bad enough for the insurance company to OK surgery. ??
