Hi BNol! Welcome to the group. I have only been here less than a month myself.
I've been on Nexium for almost 4 months, but the side effects are driving me crazy, plus I don't seem to be doing so great or I'd be sleeping right now and not up on the computer. I went to bed at 2:30 AM and was up at 3:30 AM with mild heartburn, so I do my usual of drinking a bottle or two of water, Tums, and a Lortab pain pill as that seems to be the only thing to stop the chest pain.
I started with really bad GERD problems in January due to stress of my son getting married in April.
I also got pneumonia on 4/6, (4 days after the wedding) from GERD, the doctor said. He put me on Zithromax and Bumex and I lost 14 pounds within days and was feeling better. Then a week later he started me on Nexium and I've had worse fluid problems, blurred vision and constipation ever since. I can deal with everything but the edema of the legs/feet/hands.
Sorry to hear about your husband. I'm sure that is an enormous amount of stress on you both.
Yes, you can become hoarse with reflux. I had it and didn't realize it was a sign of reflux. I also had dry coughing in the middle of the night for many years and was told it was allergies. Same for the sore throats I had. One family doctor said it was allergies, so I didn't persue it. The Hall's sugar free cough drops would help with the coughs at night.
I do drink a lot of water. I think you are smart and lucky to be on the Nexium now before things get really bad like they got for me.
My only question is if the Nexium is really working and is it normal for it to take much longer than 4 months to show significant benefits?
I seem to have as many questions as I have some answers though. Don't get me wrong, I'm better, but I'm still suffering and not able to sleep most nights lately. Still under stress but from a different source.
Hugs,
Faye
