Stopping indigestion w/ Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Hi,

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome -Constipation.  I am on Amitiza (laxative for constipation) and up til a week ago I was doing really well.  I had a bowel movement everyday and usually a decent amount.  But I ate a very bready dinner which I think locked me up and the next night I might of gotten some bad food.  The next day, I had diarrea and very instense pain in the intensines.  Ever since, I have not been the same.  I have had a bowel movement almost everyday  BUT they are small and I am really straining unlike before.  My symptoms seem to be getting worse.  I think because I am backed up I am getting acid reflux and perhaps I have indigestion which is making me very sick.  Stomach aches a lot and everytime I eat or even drink anything including water I get a bitter taste in my mouth, durping and stomach discomfort.  I am assuming that is indigestion either do to IBS, not defecating as much as I should or reflux from IBS or acid in my stomach from taking too many supplements last week because I was coming off a cold.

I do not have GERD unless I have constipation

How do you get rid of indigestion?  I was thinking of taking an antacid

I am going to take miralax in combination w/ the amitiza in an attempt to increase my bowel movements to get rid of the indigestion / reflux.

Any thoughts.

Its very frustrating and horrifying going from the dumpsters of hell like I was when I found out I had IBS to living a decent life and now back to misery.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am assuming you aren't taking a ppi or anything.  I have colonic inertia (was IBS-constipation) and I can sympathize with the GERD due to constipation.  When I am really backed up my reflux gets worse.  First I hope you are ok from whatever made you sick.  Maybe try some Pepcid AC...I am allergic to it but I hear it does wonders for others.  Or try Prilosec OTC and see if that helps.  If you are still having problems, then I would see your GI.  I hope the Miralax/Amitiza combo gets you back to regularity.  Both don't work for me.

Did you experience nausea with the Amitiza at first?

I appreciate your advice! I am taking pepsid and it is helping.  My indigestion is solely from constipation.  I started miralax yesterday too.  I hope the combo works. 

When I started taking the amitiza it did make me nauseous.  The doctor told me to take it after I eat 2/3 of my meal and that will help and to be patient and it usually dispates in 3 days.  I still have some nausea occasionally and it usually only lasts for 30 min after taking the med and goes away.  Small price to pay to be regular.   I found when I get nauseated to get something small or even drink ice tea and it helps and it will go away. 

How do you keep regular and limit the constipation.

The only way for me to keep regular is by giving myself ho***er bag enemas...have been doing so for the past 8 years.  No medicine has helped.

How long did you take the Amitiza until you saw results?  I got so nauseated on 1 pill...and I took it with food.  I took it for about 3 days and not results.

I saw results from Amitiza the next day.  My doctor told me I would be nauseated for about 3 days and it would get better.  He was right.  I still have some nausea but its mild and only lasts for about 30 min and I do not get it all the time.
