Fundo surgery !

Hello to all members, I actually stumbled onto this site looking for more info about what I should be looking forward to. I am having a Nissen fundoplication (sp) on friday Nov 30th. I have had several serious problems with my GERD. Ended up into the hospital three times before my Gastro doc decided maybe its time to do something. I am vomiting about three times a week because of the fact that you can drive a truck into my stomach, Acorrding to my surgeon. My weight goes up and down like a rollor coaster. Heartburn,,LOL Dosent matter what I eat I get it. I have been woken up at night with bile in my mouth. So I figured this is my only real option. I am just curious as to what I should exspect upon waking up after the procedure? I also have a hiatus hernia which is no suprise I guess eh? Anyways I am sure I will be more then happy to let the rest of you know how it went. I am praying that it goes smooth with no snags. Thanks for having a place like this,,it pretty cool......

Welcome to HealingWell.  You will be so glad you had this surgery, maybe not the first few days afterward.  But, believe me what you have to go through for a few days post-op is well worth it.  When you feel up to it, let us know how you are doing.  I had mine done in 2005.

Thanks for the warm welcome and tips,,,I am extremely nervous about getting this done. I vomit almost everyday, and I am worried that I will wreak havoc on the wrap after, when I dry heave. Do they generally give you something to keep you from wreaching (sp) from the nausea?? I am also already on methadone, and I am a bit worried about the amount of pain I am going to be in. Past experiences in the ER have not been all that pleasent, as soon as they know I am on methadone they treat me like I am a heroin junkie. I have been clean for three years, and not ounce have I taken a unneeded pain med, not ounce. I have my Meth Doc writing a letter stating that I am stable, and that I have been clean since I started the program. I hope this will help them get me the appropriate pain meds....

I will be more then happy to let you all know how my procedure went. Its supposed to be done on Friday Nov 30 at 12 noon. We will see how I end up. I was also told I would be in the hospital for three days, does this sound right??

First of all, congratulations for being clean for three years!  From what I understand, that is no easy task.  I think if people haven't lived around or with addictive families, they don't understand what a nightmare it is and that the habit is not easy to kick.  I lost my sister in 1999.

You will do fine post-op.  We will be here to support you.  Just make sure your doctor spells everything out in his letter so they don't try to treat you like a junkie.  You've paid your dues.

Well, I am home. Still feeling pretty sore, and bloated but not in extreme pain. I was given percoset for the pain even though I think it wont work because of the methadone. But I plan to give it a go, and if I really need something stronger I am pretty sure my Methadone doctor will help me out.

Here is a brief description on how the procedure went from friday morning to now.

I woke up at 6:30 am friday,,,A little nervious but eager to get this over with. After I arrived at the hospital, I did the whole change into a gown thing I ended up having to wait in a area with several other people waiting for surgery. My wife was with me, and she tried to keep me relaxed as best she could, and I love her to death because of it. They called my name, and after giving my wife a kiss I was off. After getting a IV the doc placed some awesome stuff that made me go bye bye,,LOL.

When I woke up, I was in some pain, but to be honest, the worst of it was my shoulders, and a wicked headach. I also had a lovely tube up my darn nose that was nothing but annoying and made my nose hurt a bit. After a while I was able to see straight,,LOL felt a little out of it, and a bit confused, but that passed after a bit. That night they took out the tube, and let me tell you it was a awful experience, and I have gone through a 24 hour PH test. The tube was there to suck out any stomach contents, and it did a bit,,,not much though. That night my shoulders and head hurt more then my stomach. But after bearing the pain for the night, let me tell you it gets easier pretty quick. They had me on a morphine, didnt do much. Took the edge off, but the Toradol they gave me helped with the headach and shoulders. Well, what can I say,,,,It hasn't been that bad so far. I am a little sore around the mid section, but hell, I was stabbed 5 times,**** The whole swallowing thing is a bit different for me, I gaged on a pill they gave me,,LOL it wasnt like I was choking, it was more like extreme indigestion. Anyways, I am going to lay down, and try and get some sleep. I will post more as I heal. I am happy as hell to be home though.

I just wanted to say thank you to the peeps who wished me well with the addiction thing,,,,If you haven't had to go through it, in some form or another you can't possably understand what it takes to get clean from opiates. Thanks guys, it made my night.
