Para esophageal hernia?????

Hello,

I usually post on the lupus forum, but I have a question for this forum.

I have GERD most probably related to scleroderma. In a previous endoscopy they stumbled across a hiatial hernia which I'm thinking could be the cause of my reflux and esophagitis.

The last endoscopy I had found a para esophageal hernia. Do any of you have one, have any of you heard of this, do any of you know what it is? I don't see my GI dr. until the end of Jan. I have googled the term and don't especially like all that I read. I have found that personal experience is often more helpful than Dr. Google!

Any help you can give me would be appreciated very much.

Hey there emmie...first off, welcome to the GERD board! Nice to have visitors from other forums once in a while..LOL. Really though, I am sorry you are going through this. I don't have any personal experience to share with you, but you are right, Dr. Google is NOT the place to get answers...so don't let yourself worry. I do hope some of our other members have experience with this, and can share with you. Please, bear with the slowness of answers right now...due to the holiday. By the way...Wishing you a Happy and safe New Year, and I do hope you get answers soon. If no one can help you here, and even if someone can, please update us once you go to the doctor. Hi,

I bumping this back up in the hopes that someone has heard of a para esophageal hernia. Most of the sites I have checked out mention that it can cause problems and that theyusually do the Fund. wrap.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks a bunch. What I have found is not what I would like to find. That's why I was hoping someone here could tell me of their personal experience.

I am dying to read this but my computer won't take me to the site you give. I have a MacBook (apple); I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or what.

I would suggest putting your email addresses in your profiles if you want to communicate with other members. Do not put any information like that directly in a post, as you may start to recieve a lot of unwanted emails. Thanks guys for understanding!

In case the other post topic gets locked, I'm going to answer your question here.

You asked if there were two kinds of hiatal hernia. The answer is yes. There is a paraesophageal hiatal hernia and a sliding hiatial hernia. Sometimes paraesophageal or sliding hiatal hernia is shortened to just hiatal hernia without the words "paraesophageal" or "sliding". The doctor probably didn't specify which type you had the first time and just said "hiatal hernia". Both types of hernia are due to a large opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus passes through it. Both types of hernia refer to your stomach pushing up into that opening and entering the chest cavity where it doesn't belong. There is a difference between sliding and paraesophageal which your doctor can explain to you in detail.

To give you an idea of the difference -
Paraesophageal is when just the fundus (top portion) of your stomach is pushed up and the place where the esophagus enters the stomach stays where it belongs.
Sliding is where the stomach is pushed up and the place where the esophagus enters the stomach is also up in the chest cavity where it doesn't belong.

The surgery to correct the hiatal hernias are the same - close the opening so nothing moves up where it shouldn't be.
