Hello everybody !

I was just wondering if anybody on here that has had a nissen and developed complications with diarrhea? I had this surgery done 8 years ago and since then suffer with the big "D". I'm watching what I eat and adding benefiber to my meals to give me some bulk. I take caltrate plus twice a day. I barely eat any fruits and veggies because that will make me go really bad and I can't leave the house.

Is it possible that our bodies have decreased enzymes after this surgery? If anybody is having the same problems that I am and have any suggestions on how I can controll the "D" I would greatly appreciate it. Is there something out there I should be taking that I don't know about?

Is it possible the surgeon accidentally nicked the vagus nerve during surgery? I know it was a long time ago, but it's something to think about. If the vagus nerve was damaged, it could lead to diarrhea problems. There's also something called "dumping syndrome" that is one of the possible things that can happen after a Nissen. You should be able to find good medical information on both dumping syndrome and the vagus nerve online.

Ha! I found it!! I didn't think I'd be able to but I still have the can of it. The brand name is Questran Poweder and the generic is cholestyramine. Here is some general info about it but you can research a lot more online if you want. It worked for me. Hope this helps. I had the orange flavor and it was like tang.

What is Questran?

Questran (cholestyramine) is a drug which absorbs bile acids in the intestines. There are two forms of Questran: the standard form, which contains cholestyramine and sucrose, and Questran Light, which contains cholestyramine and aspartame (aspartame is an artificial sweetener). It's worth nothing that artificial sweeteners can cause gastrointestinal symptoms in some people, including diarrhea, and some IBS sufferers may be sensitive to the aspartame in Questran Light.
What symptoms does it treat?

Questran is used to treat diarrhea, as excess bile acid in the intestines can lead to loose stools. In particular, patients who have had their gallbladders removed may find that they have bile-related diarrhea, as bile is normally stored in the gallbladder.
How is it taken?

Questran comes in powder form and is mixed with water or another liquid before swallowing. It is very important to follow all directions from your doctor when taking Questran, as it can prevent the absorption of vitamins if taken long-term, which could have serious health effects if not taken into consideration.

Two days maybe, I got really quick results. Then the results were "too" good and I had to cut the dosage down. Then after a couple a months my body seemed to regulate itself and I stopped taking it.

I just had the nissen wrap, jan 29th. The only issue I've had that's been reoccurring is nausea. I can swallow fine, at this point I rarely have anything that gets caught. The "wildest" thing I've tried so far is onion rings and I did fine with those, no reflux, I could never eat those before. I can also burp, not big ones like before the surgery but enough to release pressure.
