Hi,
I am very new to this forum, and have only been able to read several dozen posts.
Like many of you, my challenges with acid reflux, GERD, and esophagitis (I've been told different things) have caused me to conduct my own research.
A little history first: I have take prescription medication (Prevacid, Protonix, and Aciphex), OTC meds (Prilosec, Tums), and tried home remedies (change diet, exercise). These have all "worked" to some extent or another. However, with the exception of diet and exercise, they are really "band-aids" that mask symptoms -- they do nothing to "cure"! I am sure most of you are aware of this...
A cure - I thought - would involve more of a fundamental change in how one approaches the condition. I think I may have found it. I recently came across the book, "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You" by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright and Dr. Lane Lenard. Based on extensive research (going back to the 1800's), they show that a majority of cases of acid reflux and GERD are ultimately caused by too little acid in the stomach!
I realize that sounds difficult (or impossible) to believe, but - having read the first four chapters over the last two days - I am convinced. They lay out their case very well, and describe how the pharmaceutical industry has pulled the "wool" over the public's eyes when it comes to the benefits of acid reducers and acid blockers.
Those medications - they explain - are causing more harm than good, and their widespread use may soon result in a stomach cancer epidemic!
No, I am not one of the authors; I also have nothing to sell (I borrowed the book from the library). I was blown away by this book, and want to share it's existence and information. PLEASE read the book, and think very carefully about NOT staying on your acid reducer/blocker! I am quitting my Prilosec NOW.
Again, I haven't gotten too far into the book, but it also lists natural treatments that involve Betain Hydrochloride and certain enzymes, but I will certainly not try anything until I have read more, and confirmed my specific condition.
Finally - as an aside - I have been using an Aloe Vera mixture from Lily of the Desert. It's their Stomach Formula, which also contains (in addition to organic Aloe) a variety of herbs that soothe the stomach. It works quite well, and I believe that it could aid in healing damaged tissue (much like Aloe helps to heal burned skin) of the esophagus and stomach. As such, I drink about 3 ounces just before I go to bed (so it remains in place to coat).
Thanks for reading!
